Moscow (AFP) - Former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev, 83, has been hospitalised but is determined to fight for his life, Russian press agencies reported Thursday.
"My state of health has been moderate for a week and today I am in hospital. My health is deteriorating," Gorbachev was cited as saying by Ria Novosti agency.
"I'm hooked up to a monitor," he added, without saying where or why he was hospitalised.
"You know my character. I am determined to fight for my life," he told Interfax news agency.
The last leader of the Soviet Union was hospitalised in June 2013 for a general check-up.

The unrepentant communist has a warm place coming even though the CCCP collapsed under his watch. He didn’t want it to collapse, it just did.
I had no idea about his age.
The NYT staff will be wearing black arm bands soon.
Then again, he could have used extreme violence in a last-ditch, against-all-odds attempt to save the USSR. Gorbachev chose not to go in that direction. I'll give him credit for that.
Gorbachev wanted to keep the evil empire together but he was their Jimmy Carter, he kept making mistakes.
He is just communist scum.
When he passes we are going to be inundated with how he alone freed the world from communism.
With that giant map of Africa on his forehead, it has to be Ebola.
No thanks to Ted Kennedy and the Democrats who did everything in their power to go around President Reagan and keep the Soviet Union afloat.
I would tend to think he learned to fight at a very early age.
He sure did.
He had one black mark against him to begin with...
“I knew it!”
Forgot about that!
Interesting how Gorbachev after losing the Soviet Union chose to go on living in Moscow (where he is blamed for the USSR’s demise), while the descendants of Nikita Khrushchev unassed the Motherland & headed to America & became U.S. citizens.
Wonder how ol’ Gorby feels about Putin trying to reassemble the Workers’ Paradise, or Putin’s Stalinistic cult of personality?
I am determined to fight for my life
I predict that he will die...eventually
Putin made a comment not too long ago that the fall of communism was the worst disaster of the 20th century.
Yeah, like that was worse than the millions upon millions who suffered death by tyrant in the 20th century.
