Pennsylvania property tax relief should be targeted to taxpayers in the few school districts—most particularly in Monroe County—with the highest tax burdens, without completely eliminating school property taxes statewide, says a new report.

High property taxes are a problem in only 30 of Pennsylvania’s 500 school districts, according to the Pennsylvania Budget and Policy Center report released last week.

Monroe County’s four school districts rank among the top five districts statewide for percentage of taxable household income going to pay property taxes. […]

The average total property tax bill in Monroe County is between $3,000 and $4,000. Households in the Pocono Mountain School District pay 8.19 percent of reported income to school taxes, highest in the state, followed by the 7.76 percent of income going to school taxes paid by East Stroudsburg Area households. Stroudsburg Area households pay the fourth highest percentage (6.05 percent) and Pleasant Valley is fifth at 5.68 percent. …

New Yorkers, they showed up and immediately requested tax increases so they would feel at home and have all the good things the poorer Pennsylvania residents can provide.

Marylanders do the same thing here in south-central Pennsylvania. They also turn normally conservative areas into bastions of liberalism.

BTW: my school and property tax burden is about one third of my monthly mortgage payment, about $350 a month.

Ban the teacher’s union and watch property taxes drop like a stone

The Poconos have been largely destroyed by New Yorkers buying up the properties. Monroe is one of the worst. They actually have major drug dealing gang problems in beautiful pristine gated lake communities. The democrat infection spreads anywhere and everywhere. These bastards leave the mess they voted for and make it in formerly conservative areas.

We can only measure the value of property taxes versus what you’d pay for in a free market. You’re paying for all kinds of waste/fraud/abuse you’d never pay for in a competitive environment.

What corporation has lifetime pensions at 40-80% of retirement pay? How much is a well maintained street worth? A good education?

Try $440.00/month in York County.

In Westchester County, NY, the average property tax bill is $12,000 a year. For a town with one of the top schools, that bill is more than $20,000 a year. $350 a month is a home run.

Pocono property taxes are worst in Pa.

Well, of course they are worst in Pennsylvania. There are no Pocono property taxes in Michigan. :-)

(I love ambiguous headlines).

I would give my first born (Sorry Nick) to have those property taxes. That has to be the cheapest amount of property taxes I have ever seen. Arnold Maryland it is lucky if you can somehow get below 8 thousand. You are doing good if that happens.

My wife's parents moved out of Pennsylvania because of high property taxes. They were living on Social Security and were basically making it until the property taxes got too high and forced them out. There was no break for the poor or the elderly.

They were able to move out before the slump in housing prices. But can you imagine what happened to those like them after the housing slump?

My mother, who lives in Virginia, is in her upper 80s gets no property tax breaks and pays over $9000 a year. When Dad died, his pension was greatly reduced and she can barely afford to live in her place now.

High property taxes are hurting our Senior Citizens.
