GOP hires legal scholar to oversee Obama lawsuit

House Republicans have hired a noted constitutional lawyer to oversee a lawsuit against President Barack Obama for alleged executive overreach.

Jonathan Turley, a professor at The George Washington University, has argued in favor of the suit against Obama’s executive order delaying the employer mandate provision of Obamacare.

This is Republicans' third lawyer since the suit was initially passed in July. Two previous lawyers dropped the case and the House has yet to file the lawsuit in federal court.

“Professor Turley is a renowned legal scholar who agrees that President Obama has clearly overstepped his constitutional authority,” said Michael Steel, a spokesperson for Speaker John Boehner. “He is a natural choice to handle this lawsuit.”

Republicans argue that Obama overstepped when he delayed the provision in Obamacare that mandated that employers provide health care to their workers.

Democrats quickly criticized the selection.

“Even for $500-per-hour in taxpayer dollars, Speaker Boehner has had to scour Washington to find a lawyer willing to file this meritless lawsuit against the president,” said Drew Hammill, a spokesperson for Minority Leader Pelosi. “Now, he’s hired a TV personality for this latest episode of his distraction and dysfunction.”

Why not hire a strict constitutionalist? Turley is an ivory tower guy.

This is kind of dopey. The exec order (and numbers of them) is unconstitutional on its face and there isn’t any doubt nor equivocation about that, provided the person reading the order has a reasonable command of the English language.

But since there are no consequences to violating laws, what is the purpose of the exercise?

0bama collects constitutional violations like some people collect baseball cards.

This guy will make it look good but sabotage it to lose. Just putting it forward makes Johnny looks like he’s ‘doing something.’

If he had hired Mark Levin, I might think he was serious.

Turley is a great choice. He’s not anti-Obama, so his choice takes that card off the table for the MSM to play.

Pelosi has climbed on saying something like “they’ve hired a TV personality.” I respect this guy — very well spoken and clear on the “uber” presidency.

Turley is correct. He has been saying this for a long time. He was one of the earlier ones who pointed out that Obama is worse than anything the libs even accused Nixon of doing 10x.

I might view Turley in the same light as Dershowitz. Both are liberals, but both are insistent that the procedures must be followed, since the separation of powers and the accompanying procedural rules make up the checks and balances, the accountability, the transparency.

He was for Clinton Impeachment and he wasn’t destroyed then, so I don’t think he will be destroyed now.

My opinion of Dershowitz completely changed for the better when I saw him on RedEye with Gutfeld a couple of times. Might have been the first time I’d ever seen him laugh — and he did have a couple of good stories to tell.

I’ve seen him on Huckabee’s show. I’m not usually up late enough for Red Eye.

That might have been a result of being on Greg’s show which is rather irreverent. What I noticed on Huckabee’s show was his intellectual honesty. He cared more about following the Constitution and rule of law than a particular political ideology. Also, he is a strong supporter of Israel, unlike most of his political confreres.
