In controversial move, Chris Christie vetoes pig crate ban

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie vetoed a bill Friday that would have banned crates that severely limit the mobility of pregnant pigs, a move that will win favor with Iowa farmers and spark more speculation about Christie's presidential aspirations but cause outrage among animal rights activists who pushed for the ban.

Critics consider the small metal crates a form of animal cruelty -- the pigs aren't able to turn around in the limited space -- but advocates say they prevent sows from accidentally lying down or stepping on piglets.

Despite its strong bipartisan support in the state legislature, the Republican governor vetoed a version of the bill in 2013. When a nearly identical version passed again in the Democratic-led legislature, Christie faced mounting pressure this fall from activists and celebrities, including Bill Maher, Danny DeVito, Martha Stewart and Edie Falco.

Good work by Steve King and Branstad getting him to veto it and bring up the issue. King got the Missouri Dem AG to sue over an egg law.

What he objects to, he said, is an agenda driven by the Humane Society of the United States and its president, Wayne Pacelle. “He is not your local animal shelter guy. He has a political agenda and his agenda is to ban the ownership of animals and to take meat off the table of everybody in America.”

Any time someone ticks an animal rights type, I’m for it,
but still won’t vote for the guy.

Liberals think that your chicken, beef, and pork in made in a factory. The idiots have no idea how a farm is managed. Wait till they find out where veal comes from and how calves are penned up.

In my conservative view factory farming is cruel and inhumane, particularly these inadequate pig crates. Pigs are also smarter than dogs. I am not against the consumption of meat. We as humans can do better than to deny an animal every natural instinct, the outdoor sun, and any hope of the smallest comfort even if that means being able to change your position.

We are burning our Republic down catering to a teeny tiny and weird population (the Iowa Caucus voters).

A profoundly stupid society, on the whole.

Sows accidentally kill piglets but they don’t need to be in the crates for too long.

Man, Christie really taking on the big issues.

There are a lot of Food Luddites (to borrow a term coined by Steve Forbes), who are intent on destroying the largest, most efficient food producing machine the world has ever had.

A few of them have infiltrated FR too.

Yep. Short-term animal cruelty and live piglets is preferable to short-term freedom of movement and dead piglets. Crates may be cruel to the sow, but they are kind to the piglets.

The use words like “Factory farms” to scare people.

The simple fact is that small farmers with just a few pigs use the crates as well because they can’t afford to lose the piglets any more than the big farms do.
