20 states just raised the minimum wage. It wasn’t enough.
The Washington Post ^ | January 5, 2015 | Danielle Paquette

"The work that we do, it’s modern-day slavery," says one Florida worker who just got a 12-cent raise.

On New Year’s Day, minimum wage increased in 20 states. More states will bump pay later this year. The first round of hikes will expand paychecks by as much as $1.25 an hour, fattening the wallets of about 3.1 million Americans, according to the Economic Policy Institute. (Peruse Wonkblog or work by our labor reporter Lydia DePillis for more details about how the pay bumps could impact your state.)

Economically, the verdict is mixed on minimum wage: Supporters paint the raises as an economic stimulus, a way to reduce poverty; detractors worry budget-strained employers will be forced to cut jobs. (Read Tina Griego on Santa Fe’s experience with raising the minimum wage.)

Some workers believe the wage increases will deliver instant, tangible benefits: a bus ride, another sack of groceries. Others won’t celebrate a victory they deem more symbolic than helpful. Here are a few stories from workers who’ve gotten raises....

It never is, is it? I hate to say it, but if you're beyond your teens and still being paid the minimum wage, you're doing it wrong.

Meanwhile what’s left of the middle class is stuck in wage-freeze hell, seeing their security and net worth vaporize, compounded by the Unaffordable Care Act fleecing each of them to make the stats look decent.

That’s the poverty mindset.
If Donald Trump thought like that he would never become successful.

They can’t understand that a raise for the bottom is a cut for everyone above. Once I demand my purchase power back their raise has evaporated. Think that’s called inflation.

Or you are at (re)entry level in a very tight job market outside of your previous field.

I think that you are missing a couple of important aspects of this for the left.

If you raise the minimum wage... you also raise their income taxes, not by rate but by total value. Since these people pay Socialist Stupidity Taxes as on every dime of their income, and the higher the withholding.

Second is “prevailing wage” in union contracts which is a multiple of the minimum, which also effects public sector contracting that use prevailing wages to the contractors. So it’s also a sop to the unions.

I was with the state unemployment office for a long time, so I’m well aware of those factors.

As a side note to this thread, please consider the following. Bear in mind that the states have never delegated to the feds, expressly via the Constitution, the specific power to regulate intrastate minimum wage. So when low-information state lawmakers and company payrolls raise minimum wage to comply with a vote-winning federal minimum wage hike then we’ve got constitutional problems.

$1.25 an hour more, but your employer can only allow you to work 29 hours a week due to 0bamacare, so the employee garners an additional $36.25 a week, less taxes, so about $29.00 more a week, or $116.00 a month after taxes.

0bamacare screws everyone from the bottom to the top.

The truth is that if you are only making minimum wage, the work that you are doing probably isn't worth minimum wage. It is only government dictate that has determined your rate of pay. Anyone still making minimum beyond their training period probably hasn't improved their skills or overall value very much. I'll hire an eager, experienced person willing to work and learn and pay them for what they already know rather than spend training wages on an unproven candidate.

Minimum wage should clearly be $50 an hour. Have people no heart at all???

Basically, under the liberal victim-entitlement ethos, driven by the idea that one should not merit rewards by earning more than another, raising the minimum wage while increasing taxes on those who pay them is a means of furthering the classless society - furthering selfish liberal elite "saviors" alone reigning in power.

In which these self-proclaimed saviors of the poor work to basically penalize and impoverish those in "business class" by requiring them to fund those in "economy," so that all increasingly end up in the cargo hold, and dependent on the government all must serve, since the capitalists must greatly reduce workers or close shop.

While the saviors alone sit in business class by gaining power thru constantly fostering said victim-entitlement mentality (which substitutes charity and mercy with a demand to gain what is not earned from those who did so), and inciting class and racial warfare, which gains support for the saviors who spend other peoples money to gain power under the guise of equality.

What do you think was behind the devil's inducement of Eve to bite the fruit? She was made to see herself as a victim of Management which had maliciously conspired to unjustly deprive her from that office ("For God doth know..ye shall be as gods").

But as with unlawful rewards, her gain was her loss.

For the devil himself, the original liberal elite, thought he should be in Administration, not by merit, but by his own prideful estimation of himself. And in his selfish lust this organizer led 1/3 of the angels with him.

And being cast down, he works to gain power by setting up a rival world on earth, ruling by proxy thru men fostering the aforementioned victim-entitlement tactics to various degrees and forms, either by being deceived themselves or deceptively employing it in their lust for poper.

And thus all becoming increasingly impoverished and powerless to challenge their "saviors," who increasingly alone have power. Power to dictate the devil's terms of loyalty and exercise his rule.

Thus a vote for those who those who reject Biblical morality and principals but get elected via liberals self serving ethos, are voting for the devil.

I know this is a lot for a simply issue of the min. wage increase, but i see a lot behind it. A Clear Case to me.

And as a former restaurant chain owner once said, when he had to pay the dishwasher more then he had to pay the chefs more..

And in any case such a thing as having to pay the shopping carriage guys $100 a day is going to off set the decrease lower fuel costs may provide.

Many union contracts base salaries on a formula that uses minimum wage as a base. Raise minimum wage, wages rise all the way up the pyramid. They aren’t interested in helping burger flippers. This is a ruse to stuff union packets.
