Guntry clubs target a new breed of shooter: younger, more affluent and female
Washington Post ^ | January 13, 2015 | By Michael S. Rosenwald

Blake Vaught and Alex Williamson, buddies in their late 20s, were having a cognitive dissonance moment.

“This place is like a country club,” Vaught said, looking at a concierge desk, granite countertops and sleek black couches.

“Or like a really nice steakhouse,” Williamson said.

They were not at a country club. They were not at a steakhouse. They were at Elite Shooting Sports, a new gun range in Manassas, Va., that, like a wave of other new ranges around the country, is targeting a new breed of shooter — younger, more affluent, style-focused, increasingly female and even environmentally conscious.

The gun industry’s term for these shooting retreats: Guntry Clubs.

In Miami’s arts district, a new high-end club attracts celebrities such as LeBron James who shoot fully automatic machine guns, then chill in VIP lounges. A Texas range features gun valets. A Colorado club offers custom-fitted earplugs, apps to reserve shooting lanes and chess sets. Membership fees at these new ranges are sometimes hundreds, even thousands of dollars. Cigar lounges — yes. WiFi — of course. There is lots of leather. . .

Rational people are beginning to realize that even simple common day activities such as shopping in a grocery store are done better if armed.

That’s just cool. Can’t afford that style of gunning, but the more the merrier.

Gunt?

Seriously?

Something tells me they will be searching for a different moniker

Really liked the quote.."(I) can't afford to golf there but it doesn't hurt the game"...

More the merrier, good to see the elite and wannabes are getting the message.

Guns, cigars and affluent women. I think they’re on to something.

I belong to a “guntry club”. Lots of lanes, some 100 yd, a few tactical, members lounge, simulation room, couches in the lobby, 3 onsite gunsmiths, decent inventory, friendly staff. 7 miles from the house.

Love it.

I thought full auto guns were illegal. So why does that POS james get to fire one?

Full autos are perfectly legal, just a bunch of paperwork and background checks to go through.I’ve owned ‘em here in Ohio for over 25 years.

Not illegal, just have to be licensed to own/sell. They are available for rental at my guntry club, use supervised by the RSO.

Full auto rentals are good for business as they consume a LOT of ammo that has to be bought AT the range ;-)

You can also shoot the .50 BMG if you like, on the 100 yd range.

I know one of the founding managers at Elite in Manassas. He gave me a tour before the place opened. It is an amazing facility. I have been to lots of ranges on 4 continents and this is a very, very nice range.

It has a couple bays of 25 yards, a big 50 yard bay and an eight point 100 yd bay. There are additionally classrooms, a gunsmith shop, and a cafe. I don't know if it is a working business model, but a couple local law enforcement groups have already contracted for enough use to cover their entire debt servicing. That is good news for them.

Haven't seen this one. I have been to Silver Eagle Group in Ashburn, VA. It's an older example of the same type. Not my thing. Vive la difference ...

People like personal service.

I only offer semi-private lessons.

And I can offer Cheesecake by Ingrid Tennison which is not available yet publicly. Absolutely incredible cheesecake. Nothing like what passes for cheesecake these days. The ladies love it.

Wow, when I was a teenager I used to go to the town gravel pit for target practice. If I wanted live targets I’d go to the town dump and shoot rats.....
