European Law Enforcement Agencies: On Second Thought, Maybe Firearms Would Be Helpful

When witnesses in the same building as Charlie Hebdo saw masked men with heavy weaponry enter the building they called police, like anyone in their position would do. But the three unarmed officers on bikes who showed up proved to be most unhelpful in the situation.

According to the witness, the officers had to retreat after seeing the men were heavily armed.

That wasn’t the only instance during the three-day terror spree where police found themselves utterly unprepared to take on the jihadists.

The 27-year-old policewoman who was gunned down just south of Paris while attending a traffic accident was unarmed, as was her partner, who could do nothing to stop the gunman.

Now, after three police officers were killed during the attacks in France, a plot to murder police officers in Belgium was foiled, and a posthumous video of Amedy Coulibaly, one of the French jihadists, admitting his plan was to attack police all along, European law enforcement agencies are beginning to think differently about how and which police should be armed.

Wow, they came up with that all on their own. I guess Michael Bloomberg and his cronies didn’t get a chance to right their thinking.

West European countries have SWAT squads but they’re not rapid reaction forces.

Russia has its OMON and also the Internal Troops to rely on in a severe crisis.

A reconfiguration of European law enforcement is long overdue in view of the new threats facing them.

Nothing like a dose of reality to remind people how your brain should work.

This article is ignorant nonsense.

Only the UK and Irish don’t routinely arm their police in Europe. European police ARE armed. 95% of French police ARE armed.

And as an addendum, its a myth that Euros don’t own guns: 19m French alone own guns. 7m in Italy, 2.3m in the UK. You probably have 50m that do.

Your figures are interesting.

I recently read an article that said there were 7.5 million legal firearms in France, and about twice that many illegal firearms.

Is the figure you cite for legal owners, or based on estimates of illegal ownership in France.

I would like to be correct about this on anything I write in the future.

Thanks

Actually you are correct, the 19m inc illegal arms. The site I took it from didn’t break it down, had to check others. My mistake. The figure IS 19m, but as you said it seems to be 7-8m legal and 10-12m illegal.
