The US President vowed to “ratchet up pressure on Russia” amid fears the fighting in eastern Europe is worsening by the day.
Barack Obama today threatened to use all measures - short of military action - to force Vladimir Putin to back down over the Ukraine crisis.
He vowed to “ratchet up pressure on Russia” amid fears the fighting in eastern Europe is worsening by the day.
He also warned Putin was “hell-bent on engaging in military conflicts” regardless of the damage it caused to Russians with its sanctions-hit economy nosediving into recession.
The US leader spoke out in India after the West blamed pro-Moscow rebels for the deaths of 30 civilians and injuries to 95 in weekend bloodshed in strategic port city Mariupol.
Russia and separatist forces claim that the Ukrainian army was responsible for the attack on civilians.
Kiev strongly denied this and alleged intercepted communications proved the weekend bloodshed was the work of “terrorists who receive support in Russia”.
Both the US and EU issued strong warnings to Putin, calling on him to curb the rebels.
“I will look at all additional options that are available to us, short of military confrontation, and try to address this issue,” said Obama.
“We are deeply concerned about the latest break in the ceasefire and the aggression that these separatists - with Russian backing, Russian equipment, Russian financing, Russian training and Russian troops - are conducting.”
