he new far-left government in Greece dropped a bombshell on its first day in office by abjuring an EU statement on Russia.
It said in a press communique on Tuesday (27 January): “the aforementioned statement was released without the prescribed procedure to obtain consent by the member states and particularly without ensuring the consent of Greece”.
“In this context, it is underlined that Greece does not consent to this statement”.
It added that its new PM, Alexis Tsipras, expressed “discontent” in a phone call to EU foreign relations chief Federica Mogherini.
The EU statement on Russia, published on Tuesday morning, claimed all 28 leaders had agreed Russia bears “responsibility” for a rocket attack on the Ukrainian city of Mariupol, which killed 30 people.

Orthodox solidarity, I expect Greece to eventually become a hardcode Russian ally, and even having the Russians have bases there.
I have heard it theorized that Russia has no intention of invading the Ukraine but has plans on invading Turkey if something should happen to Syrias PM. If that were to happen And Turkey were to be invaded what would the Greeks do I wonder about that.
If the Russians could restore Constantinople, more power to them.
The EU did away with that “unanimous consent” with the Treaty of Lisbon. Now all it requires is a “qualified majority”.

There has always been a fairly large faction in Greece with an affinity for the Eastern European version of “social democracy”, another euphemism for Communist rule.
It was only by the narrowest of margins that Greece was not made part of the Soviet bloc, as were its neighbors Albania, Yugoslavia and Bulgaria. And even at that, there was a period of civil unrest for many years after the Second World War.
Orthodox solidarity has nothing to do with the affinity of Greece for all things Russian. And Greece has something that Russia wants, access on the Mediterranean.

The power broker states of Germany and France rammed a position statement and ORDERED all the lesser states to consent and one state said “we have to follow the rules” and now they are shocked they are being held to their own rules?
I read that Putin has made alliances not only with new left Euro parties (like in Greece), but also with the new right (Le Pen in France). Seems to be paying off.

People forget between 1945 and 1951 there was a communist incursion which attempted to take over the country.
The communists were beaten back and most fled the country. Greece revoked their citizenship and prohibited them from ever returning to the country.
The polics of Greece fall into “there are no friends in politics, only common interests.”

Last time I was in Istanbul it looked like the Russians had already invaded.

A FR posted here the guy’s an athiest, another the EU needs a majority not a unanimous vote. No Russian aint going to take back Constantinople.

Russia needs a financial boost; bailing out Greece in exchange for produce, land or even labor to improve the Russian demographics is not unlikely.
Russia’s practically bankrupt itself, and now sporting its latest downgrade to junk status. The only things Russia has to offer are “humanitarian” weapons convoys, murderous convicts and Russian conscripts.
