UKRAINE: Six Ways to Help Ukraine Resist Russia’s Latest Invasion
Wall Street Journal ^ | Feb. 1, 2015 | David J. Kramer

Jan. 25, President Obama stated Separatists in Ukraine had “Russian backing, Russian equipment, Russian financing, Russian training and Russian troops,” and that he will “look at all additional options that are available short of military confrontation to address this issue.” All talk, as was Mr. Obama’s bragging in State of the Union address ...

...Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk —president of EU—tweeted after Mariupol attack: “Once again, appeasement encourages the aggressor to greater acts of violence. Time to step up our policy based on cold facts, not illusions.”

The West needs to respond immediately... six recommendations, some U.S. can do alone and others with European and other allies:

• Mr. Obama should reverse his single-biggest mistake: refusal to provide Ukraine with military help. Rejecting requests for antitank and antiaircraft weapons and other defensive systems abandoned Ukrainians in their time of greatest need. It also telegraphed to Putin American limits to helping Kiev....We also need to provide more intelligence so Ukrainian forces can better prepare for the next attack.

• NATO and U.S. need to release publicly much more evidence about Russian forces inside Ukraine and attacking it from outside...

• Add Gazprom, the Russian energy company, and its head Alexei Miller, to sanctions list...

• Exclude Russia from global system to process payments—known as Swift...

• Russian officials at highest levels should be added to Western visa ban and asset-freeze lists... Putin, Lavrov ... Defense Minister Shoygu...

• Mr. Putin’s latest moves should end careless talk about easing sanctions against his regime...

Calls for financial assistance to Ukraine are vital... But much more urgent is need to help Ukraine defend itself against the Russian military threat and invasion. Vladimir Putin may be leading Russia over an economic cliff, but we must make sure he does not take Ukraine with it.

Unrelated but about Ukraine, this lady in Russia is being tried for treason in Russia: http://www.rferl.org/content/russia-ukraine-treason-mother/26828233.html

Here is the gist of what she is accused of:

“Davydova’s husband, Anatoly Gorlov, has said that his wife phoned the Ukrainian Embassy in Moscow in April and said a military base near their home had emptied out, suggesting the soldiers may have been deployed to Ukraine.”

“The case has sparked heated debate in Russia, where some critics say the charges against Davydova amount to a tacit admission that Russian military personnel are operating in eastern Ukraine.”

Currently the biggest opponent for helping Ukraine seems to be the White House.

This article says Susan Rice of the White House has been stopping sending weapons to Ukraine clashing with General P. M. Breedlove over it. http://www.nytimes.com/2015/02/02/world/us-taking-a-fresh-look-at-arming-kiev-forces.html?_r=0

This FT article requires registration http://www.ft.com/intl/cms/s/0/7cfc8ac6-ab17-11e4-91d2-00144feab7de.html

.. but the relevant part there is that the Congress is willing to help Ukraine, but the White House opposes.

Yes, both Senate & House voted to help Russia. Obama changed to send MRE & blankets. Remember, ‘hot mike’ incident President Obama — ‘After My Election I Have More Flexibility’?
Exchange:
The exchange:

President Obama: ON ALL THESE ISSUES,but particularly missile defense, this, this can be solved but it’s important for him to give me space.

President Medvedev: Yeah, I understand. I understand your message about space. Space for you…

President Obama: This is my last election. After my election I have more flexibility.

President Medvedev: I understand. I will transmit this information to Vladimir.

I beleive Ukraine was ONE of those issues!

You made a small mistake. Senate & House voted to help *Ukraine* and Obama shot them down.
