U.S. DROPS TO 49TH IN WORLD PRESS FREEDOM RANKINGS, WORST SINCE OBAMA BECAME PRESIDENT
The Intercept ^ | February 12, 2015 | Glenn Greenwald

Each year, Reporters Without Borders issues a worldwide ranking of nations based on the extent to which they protect or abridge press freedom. The group’s 2015 ranking was released this morning, and the United States is ranked 49th.

That is the lowest ranking ever during the Obama presidency, and the second-lowest ranking for the U.S. since the rankings began in 2002 (in 2006, under Bush, the U.S. was ranked 53rd). The countries immediately ahead of the U.S. are Malta, Niger, Burkino Faso, El Salvador, Tonga, Chile and Botswana.

Some of the U.S.’s closest allies fared even worse, including Saudi Arabia (164), Bahrain (163), Egypt (158), the UAE (120), and Israel (101: “In the West Bank, the Israeli security forces deliberately fired rubber bullets and teargas at Palestinian journalists”; 15 journalists were killed during Israeli attack on Gaza; and “the authorities also stepped up control of programme content on their own TV stations during the offensive, banning a spot made by the Israeli NGO B’Tselem that cited the names of 150 children who had been killed in the Gaza Strip”)

Didn't the administration bug the phones of AP reporters and threaten to reveal information about them unless AP stopped berating, writing negative stories about the White House?

Didn't the administration bug the phones of AP reporters...

They sure did, but they had to do it because of the obstructive Republicans in Congress. Or maybe it was because of Sarah Palin.

At any rate, the administration did it to help the children. So it's all good.

The list here is very very political, and tends to reflect the agenda of this org., which is pretty blatant.
Not that the US is doing too well with press freedom, but the reasons given for lots of others don’t have much to do with the press or freedom at all. Israel for instance.

They are only free to tell the lies officially approved by the regime. All other liars will be shot.

You can easily find out:

1) Go to the page you want to find out about.
2) Right click on the page and select View Source
3) Type Ctrl-F and type in a word near what you’re interested in (e.g., Comanche) and press Enter.

That will take you to my post. You can then look for the URL for the photo.

So, the US had a worse record for press freedom under Bush, who was savaged by the news media every day from before his first day in office without an effective response from him, than it does under Obama, who has bugged phones, intimidated and threatened reporters, and is currently seeking to take over the internet and license bloggers.

Tells me all I need to know about "Reporters Without Borders".

Call me skeptical that there is no real objective method of determining the ranking other than a popularity contest.

It is by our press’ own management and their leftist political will, that press freedom is in the condition it is under the Bamster. They are not doing their jobs and have totally let the country down.
