The mother of a 7-year-old who was raped and murdered got some measure of payback by helping firefighters burn down the Orange Park, Fla., home once owned by the convicted killer. The man is now serving a life-sentence, and his residence, where the crime occurred, was torched as part of a training exercise for local firefighters.

Misleading headline. The Mom didn't burn down the home, the local Fire Department did as a training exercise.

Still, I'm glad to see the smile on her face and can only imagine how much bigger it would be if the perp was inside at the time.

I remember following this little girls case on Websleuths. What an amazing feeling it must be for this Mom and family, to watch it Burn, and wipe it’s existence from her neighborhood ... It doesn’t heal all the pain, but it’s sure a good place to start.

Sometimes people just do it on their own. Years ago a local farm woman who had suffered decades of abuse from her husband finally broke and killed him. Their house had a butcher shop in the basement where she dismembered the body and then scattered the parts across several counties.

After the court case resolved the adjoining property owner bought the property, bulldozed the house into the basement and now it’s part of a cattle pasture.

Violent crime, including crimes against children has been in a steady decline. Our violent crime rates are now the same as they were when Kennedy was President. It is the "perception of crime" that has increased.

Despite Amber Alert hysteria, crimes like this are very rare, which is why these types of crimes make national news when they happen. Of all murdered children under the age of five (and, yes, I realize this victim was seven but I doubt the statistics are much different) only 3% are murdered by a stranger.
