Robert Reich: The 3 biggest myths plaguing the U.S. economy
Salon ^ | March 12, 2015 | Robert Reich

Posted on 03/12/2015 1:33:02 AM PDT by Cincinatus' Wife

1. The “job creators” are CEOs, corporations, and the rich, whose taxes must be low in order to induce them to create more jobs. Rubbish. The real job creators are the vast middle class and the poor, whose spending induces businesses to create jobs. Which is why raising the minimum wage, extending overtime protection, enlarging the Earned Income Tax Credit, and reducing middle-class taxes are all necessary.

2. The critical choice is between the “free market” or “government.” Baloney. The free market doesn’t exist in nature. It’s created and enforced by government. And all the ongoing decisions about how it’s organized – what gets patent protection and for how long (the human genome?), who can declare bankruptcy (corporations? homeowners? student debtors?), what contracts are fraudulent (insider trading?) or coercive (predatory loans? mandatory arbitration?), and how much market power is excessive (Comcast and Time Warner?) – depend on government.

3. We should worry most about the size of government. Wrong. We should worry about who government is for. When big money from giant corporations and Wall Street inundate our politics, all decisions relating to #1 and #2 above become rigged against average working Americans.

Please take a look at our video, and share.

the myth is that spending creates job...

And why the Left says that by increasing welfare rolls they are helping the economy.

They're nothing but liars.

In what world can an economics Ph.D. be so flamingly ignorant and obtuse, especially about his first “point?” My only answer to that is that he’s never held a real job in his life so he has no insight to how things work.

Hey Reich, where do you think the middle class gets the money to spend ( besides those that work for the government or are on the government dole )?

( On a side note: I always suspected that Reich held 2 cabinet positions. Donna Shalala was just him in drag. Never saw the two of them together )

Very typical of academics who are paid to write policies that effect the rest of us.

There are lots places in this world filled with “the poor”...

Funny how wealth just doesn’t spring out of those places...

It’s incomprehensible to people who work for a living.

A sawed off little troll who has a chip on his shoulder. Nothing but a little communist/socialist whose only credentials are that he was a friend of Slick in college.

Gee, just like Obamacare.

But it’s not rigged when big money comes from Soros, Gates, Zuckerburg, etc. and unions?

Give me a break! Reich used to be a lot smarter when he was six feet tall.

The real job creators are small businessmen. CEOs often use government to block competition from emerging, preventing job creation. Government can only compel, not create, and consistently sides with the crony capitalists who want government protection from competition and can afford to pay for influence. Spending by the working class and the poor creates demand, which is different from jobs, unless you want to count the jobs created in China and Indonesia. It’s the little guy working 80 hours a week who creates jobs as he hires people to fill the roles he has created.

The free market is what exists in nature when both sides have the integrity to choose voluntary exchange and the power to refuse outside compulsion. Government is force, the opposite of freedom. We need some government to protect against those with no integrity, but today’s bloated FedGov has become exactly what a limited constitutional government was supposed to protect the people against.

We should worry about the size of government, which must be small enough that it is not “for” anyone. Government should be for freedom - providing for common defense and securing the blessings of liberty. Any government big enough to be for one group over another is big enough to be worth controlling and manipulating, big enough to attract exactly those people that it is supposed to defend us against.

There are tons of evidence that “economists” like him are WRONG, and Economists like Thomas Sowell are RIGHT, but the failure of socialism and all forms of wealth redistribution do not deter liberals one single bit.

If it doesn’t work, nobody calls them on it, it isn’t recorded for future reference, the failure of liberal economic policies simply goes down the memory hole, chalked up as wrong time/plan/leadership/execution/funding, etc.

They NEVER, even for one gazillionth of a second, consider that the fundamental idea of theirs, that wealth production lies DEFINITIVELY in the hands of each worker, and not in any form in the people who take chances, invest their money and build a business.

Amazing.

I detest liberals and everything about them.

I hate to break it to him but the free market most certainly exists in nature. Maroon some folks on an island and a market will emerge without government initiatives.

Government is the servant of the people as they inhabit the market; when it starts thinking it’s the boss it destroys the market and then the people.
