NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – Emergency responders are rushing to the scene of an explosion at a building in Manhattan’s East Village.

The collapse was reported at around 3:20 p.m. at 7th Street and Second Avenue Thursday afternoon.

Multiple injuries have been reported, the Fire Department said.

The collapse occurred at 125 Second Avenue, which is a residential and commercial building.

Fire could be seen tearing through at least two buildings at the location.

The fire quickly escalated to four alarms, according to the FDNY.

It usually is. The investigation of the Harlem explosion showed that Con Ed had replaced a 100-foot gas main, but had failed to test the replacement properly for leaks.

Familiar territory. I used to pass by there when I worked at NYU in the village for many years, before retiring. And I think I taught a few classes in that big white building over on the left. I see it has an NYU flag on it.

I would imagine some of those buildings go back to the 1800’s. They probably have been remodeled so many times over the years that they cannot be safe any more..............

Close, Pillow Biter Smith on Fox just said the building went up in 1900

I can believe that. Also, you simply would not believe the condition of the mechanical equipment in some of those buildings down there. I’m talking “third world” style disrepair.

I remember often walking past McSorley’s, although I’ve never been much of a bar patron, and I commuted home before drinking time. But it has an admirable look about it. I think they’re maybe a block or two over.

The buildings are safe, but some of the connections are less so and the problem is that people don’t report it or react in time. FDNY is fantastic and gets out there immediately if you smell gas, and so does Con Ed.

But many people just sit around and wait for somebody else to call. That said, landlords often attack people who call in gas leaks (because FDNY shuts down services and Con Ed has to recheck the lines) so probably tenants are intimidated. A lot of times, it’s actually caused by a lousy contractor hired by the landlord or coop owner to do repairs on a stove or replace some gas appliance. Sometimes it’s an old pipe, but usually it’s human negligence.

The big Harlem explosion was caused by a new pipe that Con Ed installed, so anything can happen. They supposedly sent all the Con Ed guys for ‘retraining’ after that happened.

I know I should not judge but those don’t look like people I’d like to know. Very disturbing.

Some of Bill Ayers’ minions blew one up in that part of town preparing a terror bombing in the early 70’s.
