ATHENS, Greece (AP) — Greece's defense minister said his country's government has obtained "stunning evidence" to support its claim that German World War II reparations are worth a massive 278.7 billion euros ($302 billion).

...

"The evidence is so compelling that it will lead to the reopening of cases, even those that have already gone to court."

...

Germany says it has already settled its reparations to Greece in post-war agreements.

Sigmar Gabriel, Germany's economy minister, argued that Greece's new left-led government was attempting to use the reparations issue to influence debt negotiations.

"To be honest I think it's dumb," Gabriel said. "I think that it doesn't move us forward one millimeter on the question of stabilizing Greece."

Looks like WWII is being used on the Germans like White Guilt over slavery is used on the U.S.

That is a more realistic possibility than most people realize. They frequently run right up to the line of exchanging fire then back off at the last second.

This is what happens when the Ponzi Scheme known as the Welfare State runs out of Other People’s Money. The con artists running the scam (in other words, the politicians) start inventing reasons why other people should be forced or guilted into giving them even more money to keep the con going.

You could have a point. I believe several centurys ago Greece was a strong military power and undoubtedly walked all over some other nation. I think Greece should pay them back.

This is all so silly, just as silly as our very own trying to get White people whose ancestors were in Europe during slavery days to pay reparations to those who were never slaves.

The real irony, is the party that freed slaves and did Blacks the most good is the Republicans and is now hated - even MLK was a Republican.

“Looks like WWII is being used on the Germans like White Guilt over slavery is used on the U.S.”

Yep, and has been since the end of WWII. What’s, rarely mentioned is that after the war, Germany was totally destitute, basically piles od bricks and stones. And, thereby could not pay reparations. Being that the U.S. wanted to create a strong Germany as a barrier against Sovet expansion, the U.S. paid Germany’s and others as well. And, Greece has acknowledged it. But, that’s not good enough for them. Greeks will always want more - of other people’s money. On and on, never enough for these losers.

Greece’s government is hard leftist. They want Germany to foot the bill for their largesse without having to pay it back.

Nice try. But I hear Italy has claims against the Greeks from the Punic Wars. 2,600 years of back interest means that’ll cost a pretty penny.

http://www.forbes.com/sites/timworstall/2012/09/12/does-germany-really-owe-greece-a-etrillion-in-war-reparations-probably-not-no/

According to Forbes, reparations have been paid, but there is the issue of a loan.

The Greeks were forced to make a loan to Germany at zero interest. The Germans have two options.
The first option that the money was stolen and therefore doesn’t have to be repaid.
But if the loan was a commercial transaction, then it, by the terms of the loan, at 0% interest, and the Germans can re-pay it without breaking a sweat or helping the Greeks very much.
