A new debate for Georgia Republicans: What’s a party for?
Atlanta Journal-Constitution ^ | 4/26/15 | Jim Galloway

This midlife identity crisis comes at what may be the zenith of Republican influence in the state, courtesy of a race for state GOP chairman. . . .

Incumbent John Padgett, the owner of an ambulance company, is seeking re-election to a two-year term. He faces Alex Johnson, a 30-year-old DeKalb County attorney with libertarian leanings. It is something of a rematch.

In a final ballot at the 2013 convention, the young Johnson surprised many by receiving 40 percent of the vote — this at a gathering of delegates whose average age is somewhere south of the Mesozoic Era.

*****

With the tent growing bigger and bigger, core identities can be blurred or lost.

Then there are those unchanging pillars of principle. Sometimes bedrock foundations aren’t what they seem. A decade ago, the definition of marriage as being solely between a man and a woman would have qualified as a solid GOP pillar.

*****

Delegates will consider many resolutions, chief among them an endorsement of the “religious liberty” bill being pushed by state Sen. Josh McKoon, R-Columbus — without any anti-discrimination language, as recommended by Gov. Nathan Deal.

I asked Johnson about his own attitude toward gay marriage. He answered as any young Republican might. Yes, he thinks that marriage should be between a man and woman. But there was more:

“I think that, in the end, the government shouldn’t be what’s dictating the definition of marriage. . . . In the end, everyone needs to be welcomed. I don’t think the Republican Party needs to come across as anti-homosexual or anti-gay. I think that’s not a good idea.”

Those are good, even kind thoughts. But they are thoughts that are relatively new to the Republican experience.

The whole point of this piece is that GA Republicans now accept same-sex marriage, or at least the ones coming up buy into it. So too bad for any of you Mesozoic types who have some problem with it.

Stop voting for and contributing to the campaigns of politicians who will not stand for the right principles. That is the sure way of correcting this lack of a spine.

And of course set aside the moral aspects of the question, such as should the state reward people for entering into unhealthy relationships? I mean physically unhealthy relationships. More than half of new hiv cases are among homosexuals.

Josh McCoon, whom I am proud to have as my state Senator, is not at all Mesozoic. Is hardly an oldster, much less Mesozoic.

I am so glad to be a conservative and not a Republican. I am so happy not to care if it goes the way of the whigs

No need for the party to turn “anti-gay”, just acknowledge there is an objective difference between male-female pairing vs male-male / female-female pairings ... that being the tendency to reproduce (and the interest society & state have therein), vs the utter impossibility for the latter to.

Sorry Johnson. God already dictated the definition of marriage. And you're never going to change it. All you're going to do is destroy your country, your party, and yourself.

Don’t get too comfortable, the cultural marxists are in the process of re-defining what a “conservative” is, things like calling the likes of Bruce Jenner a conservative.

Sure, everyone should be welcome to a putatively conservative group, including leftists. That’s the 21st C way.

I went independent. I will never give another penny to the republicrats after they funded obamacare 4 times and then unbelievably funded unconstitutional amnesty. To hell with them.

Georgia republicans are still democrats...only difference is they wipe their asses with their right hand and not the left.

Hell the only governor we’ve had in the past 30 years with any balls has been Zell Miller (D).

Just 10 years ago we had the lowest priced gasoline in the southeast if not the USA...republicans quickly changed that.

I’m getting old....what else can I be crotchety about....
