Omar Khadr is now Canada’s problem, let’s make the right choice: Maher Arar
The Star ^ | Oct 03 2012 | Maher Arar

Keeping Khadr locked up in extremely strict prison conditions will not solve the problem regardless what you believe he is or is not. Arlette Zinck, an English professor at King’s University College in Edmonton, has devised a special educational program to help his rehabilitation. He has reportedly shown progress and we are told he’s been very keen to continue on that path.

In my opinion, that would be the best outcome: a Canadian citizen who can reintegrate into society, go to school, and eventually become an active and, hopefully, a contributing Canadian citizen. This outcome is far from guaranteed, but the same could be said of any offender who is going through a rehabilitation process.

We have two choices. We either continue to demonize him for actions he took when he was a teenager or we lend him a hand. The choice we make will certainly tell the rest of the world who we are as a nation and, above all, who we are as people. Together, let’s make the right choice.

This editorial is from 2012 but it is relevant to the Omar Khadr story playing out in Canada right now.

Maher Arar was deported to Syria by the USA back in 2002 because of his connections to Al-Quaeda. The Canadian government gave Arar 10.5 million dollars for the inconvenience, and a personal apology from Prime Minister Harper. Arar is still considered to be a terrorist by the USA, though in Canada he's been given countless awards and an honorary degree.

Yes, and they protected Charles Ng from the death penalty. Canada has made some poor choices. 10 million to Maher Arar? Here's a recent tweet: "So Omar Khadr has been a model prisoner, an undisputed fact even by govt lawyers. Yet govt pursues its ideological crusade against him." By the way, Arar wants the USA to apologize to him too.

Many Canadians are already saying Khadr is an innocent victim. Soon the government will be giving him the 20 million he's demanding.

well most prisoners are model inmates its when they’re released that causes problems.

It wouldn’t shock me if Khadr will return to promoting jihad like Moazzam Begg did in the UK under the guise he is a victim with the islamist org CAGE.

Maybe he can pose again with the severed hand and foot of one of victims.

Yes, he did that. Grinning while he held up a foot and a hand chopped from an infidel.
