A plan that will close nearly 2,000 miles of public roads that have previously been open for use by the people of Mesa County is creating a public backlash against the Grand Junction field office of the federal Bureau of Land Management.
The BLMs resource management plans (RMP) regulate the access and types of traffic allowed on roads on public lands. Road maintenance and seasonal closures are also detailed in such plans.
But the most recent RMP in Mesa County indicates the BLMs intent to limit access to public roads which have traditionally been open to motorized, horse, and foot traffic. Accessible routes will decrease from the current 3,469 miles to just 1,777. The BLM has not offered a clear justification for its planned road closures, which has left many in Mesa County frustrated and baffled.
The Grand Junction Daily Sentinel reported that people with physical disabilities are especially troubled by the BLMs plans.
There also appears to be conflicts between federal law and the BLMs proposed closures. According to Brandon Siegfried, the President of the Public Lands Access Association,as quoted in the Daily SentinelMost of the routes facing closure were established 50 years ago or more. Federal law requires the BLM to treat such historic routes like highways, which cannot be closed through a resource management plan.

Western Colorado has its own “Harry Reed”??
“Of the people, by the people, and for the people.”
The little people must not be allowed to trample on Sacred Gaia unless the Guardians of Gaia at the BLM ordain it.
Shouldn’t the state of colorado have the final say.....
Well if we still practiced Federalism as defined byt he founders...
That picture should be posted as a sign at the blocked-off entrance to every road.
ht to Mile Hi.
Colorado Ping ( Let me know if you wish to be added or removed from the list.)
I'll give you one guess and it sounds like "environmental whacko".
There are many tyrants working for the BLM that want to keep people off those lands, mass firings should be implemented.
Another agency needing their budget cut in half, so they can focus on the “Management” part of their job and back off on the “Bureau” portion.
And, YES, you CAN dictate which jobs go unfunded!
Fire 2000 government workers while you’re at it.
Stay off the King’s land you peasants.
The BLM is headed by former longtime Dingy Reid’s aide Neil Kornze ..
Open defiance. Armed resistance. That would be the response in my neighborhood.
Put in fire trails and go away. People don’t need guides in these parks. That’s what maps are for.
who wants to buy the Colorado Land I have to wonder?
I suspect I’ve been on some of the roads they’d like to close. I’ve taken a guided tour via 4-wheeler on a mesa that straddled the CO/UT state line. The roads led to a bunch of old uranium mines and a landing strip on top of the mesa. Saw some really cool views of the river valley below. It would be a shame to lose that access. There were signs on the top of the mesa showing the way to Moab, UT.
I’ve come to despise BLM uniforms the last few years.
Agenda 21 crap.
