Black French have been a part, like the UK, of France for many decades. Nobody in France, except for the recent black immigration of course, thinks of the black community (again except for recent immigrants) as an immigrant community anymore. Black French from Africa and the Caribbean assimilated in the 60’s and 70’s. Its the recent black African/Muslims that haven’t: those from places like Somalia.
The same for non Muslim North African immigrants, such as Algerians. France’s most famous modern sportsman (Zidane) is the son of two Algerians. Same goes for French Lebanese.
When French talk of immigrants today, they will be referring to Muslims. Brown Muslims from Middle East and N Africa. Black Muslims from Somalia.
That’s a very simplistic, I admit, quick sketch.
