What’s Behind Big Science Frauds?
New York Times ^ | 5-22-15 | ADAM MARCUS and IVAN ORANSKY

Posted on 05/24/2015 5:14:05 PM PDT by DeweyCA

In December, Science published a paper claiming that people could change their minds about same-sex marriage after talking for just 20 minutes with a gay person. It seemed too good to be true — and it was.

(snip)

Most science and health reporters rely on the top journals for news leads. They tend to move in a pack, descending on a small handful of news items each week. When the papers in those journals have the fillip of a hot topic, like sex or race, the frenzy is even greater. And yet many reporters fail to do the necessary due diligence before publishing their work. The drive for scoops is even greater in journalism than it is in science.

Economists like to say there are no bad people, just bad incentives. The incentives to publish today are corrupting the scientific literature and the media that covers it. Until those incentives change, we’ll all get fooled again.

Professors and scientists are often seen as dispassionate people in search of the truth. That is wrong. They are human beings like everyone else. And they can be easily tempted to "fudge" their research in order to get more research grants, fame, and status with their politically-correct colleagues. Leftists (like the UCLA guy who produced this lie about people who oppose gays) have thoroughly corrupted the educational system.

The Weekly Standard also had a column on this incident and the perils of fraud in the social sciences at http://www.weeklystandard.com/articles/big-phony-data_952627.html?nopager=1

How come the NYT doesn’t mention the biggest scientific fraud of all — man-made global warming?

Interesting that it was published just before the Irish gay marriage vote.

Also interesting that it was denounced as ‘bad science’ when it was blatant gay propaganda.

Has the New York Slimes ever said anything critical of gays? Just curious...

You hear over & over about Ike’s warning of the “Military Industrial Complex” in his farewell speech. What is less remembered is that he also warned of the government / big science complex stifling true science. And, boy was he right!

Government funding of research is like high school. Only the cool kids are allowed. We were a lot better off when people like David Packard were literally changing the world from their garage.

My impression is that there are many that are...but then they are not the one's getting popular attention. There are charlatan science popularizes and activists who love attention more than the hard trench work of honest research...just as there are charlatan mega-preachers who love attention more than the hard work of really connecting and giving of themselves to others.
