Video about race at a high school sparks controversy in local town

BEDFORD, Mass. (MyFoxBoston.com) -- A controversial video about race at a local high school has parents demanding answers from school officials.

The video, entitled (Expletive) White People Say: BHS Edition, was shown during the Wednesday morning announcements at Bedford High School on its student-run show "BHS Live."

In the video, students acted out vignettes that included stereotypes white students might say about African American students.

"I'm very offended by what I saw," said parent Bob Marshall. "It was a very disgusting video, very hurtful video."

Marshall's daughter first alerted him to the video, telling him that she and other students in her class were offended by the message portrayed.

"A lot of them were upset by what they saw," Marshall said. "I'm shocked that a video like that could be displayed and that nobody oversaw it."

In a letter to parents, the principal of BHS admitted "...there has not been a vetting process of videos for BHS Live. Therefore, the video was not previewed by any administrator, student or teacher surrounding BHS Live. A protocol for vetting student videos is being developed."

Superintendent John Sills told FOX25 that the video was not intended to be a joke, and was made by a senior who is in the broadcast journalism program as a way to spur a conversation on race relations.

"Unfortunately, it was framed in a way that was offensive," Sills said.

Sills said Wednesday school leaders hosted a meeting with students and staff to discuss reactions to the video, and added more than 150 students joined the conversation.

"I would never say it's good when something offensive happens. But we always seek to find positives, and we continue to work to derive learning from it," Sills said.

Sills said employees would not face any disciplinary action, but would not say if the student who made the video will be disciplined.

Bob Marshall told FOX25 he was not satisfied with the district's response.

"To me, it's smoke and mirrors to say oh, it was a learning lesson," Marshall said. "Somebody needs to be held accountable and somebody needs to lose their job over it."

That
principal should be fired, along with the superintendent.
No excuse whatsoever. All whites who saw this thing should sue for emotional damages.

I got those old white guy blues
From my head down to my shoes
Seems like this just ain't my time.

You say I took your stuff
Now you ain't got enough
Not even one thin dime.

You say This Old White Guy's to blame
I should live each day in shame
I don't deserve anything I got.

But you're living like a bum
And must me really dumb
You think you're down just because I'm up.
.
Old White Guy is my name
You say “White Privilege” is my game
Call me Racist when I was just an embryo.

And that gives you every right
To hate me cause I'm white
Every little place I go.

When you see me in the store
Your pants down on the floor
Tell me how I am such a disgrace.

When you see me on the street
We don’t have time to greet
Gotta have that “Conversation” about race.

Well Old White Guy's had enough
Go buy your own stuff
Get up off your lazy ass.

If you come for what I got
Yer likely to get shot
End up fertilizing my grass.

Got those Old White Guy Blues
It's everywhere in the news
every breath I take is a micro aggression.

And I know it won't make you smile
I plan to stay for a while
Cause I Got to vote in the next election!

Got those Old White Guy Blues
from my head down to my shoes
Things are gettin’ harder and harder to figure.
I thought I did everything right
But you still hate just cause I'm white.
I guess the OLd White Guy...He's the new N***** ;>)

All official “conversations” about race boil down to this: Here’s a list of bad things white people do. And if you’re a white person, you’re either doing these bad things, or you’re benefiting from other whites who have done them.

I’m not saying we don’t need to discuss race in this country. Any such discussion needs to be done in a balanced and a mutually respectful (even peaceful) way. That sure isn’t happening now.

Allow me to say it then. I'm sick of hearing about it. It's turning me into a racist.

It’s satire.......isn’t it?

It’s gotta be satire.

Wow. This article says a lot about nothing!!

How true.

I watched maybe a third. I couldn't take the sophomoric presentation, not to mention the extremely poor audio. Subtitles would have helped. It's not worth any precious seconds of life to understand the dialogue.

Probably a response to a caricaturizing joke, or maybe laying the justification groundwork for any academic performance issues.

I'll bet the wannabe Spike Lees make up 99-44/100& of Al "Just Us" Sharpton's tv audience.

Here's what I mean. It is a fair question to ask, for example, why blacks earn less than other ethnic groups in the country. Some race-based discussions can be useful, if such discussions are balanced and honest, and offer fair and practical solutions.

But it is obviously not fair or helpful to say: Well, it's all because white people_______(fill in the blank with something negative). And as you know, that response is the only one you'll hear these days.

Never in the history of mankind has a race of people done so little with so much offered to them to advance their human condition..

Not quite sure. I couldn't understand. And I listen to a lot of OTR, sped up. Could have been the latest current school slang for all I heard with the audio quality.

The person that should be fired is the "broadcast journalism" teacher for not flunking the senior out of the program for such a poor quality production, imho.

It unfortunately mirrors the declining standards of the LSM industry, so nothing will be done.

"Allow me to say it then. I'm sick of hearing about it. It's turning me into a racist."

Yup. I grew up in a racist white-bread home and dis-associated with my parents in my late teens because of that. I've had many friends of varying races and ethnic background throughout my life, especially Navy years.

Now, I also am becoming a racist of the black and hispanic communities because they keep blaming me for their self created problems because I'm some white suppressor. Of course, I admire people like Ben Carson, Thomas Sowell, Herman Cain and many others who don't play the race card. It's getting really difficult to not have a bias as I watch the black leadership promote racism.

Because of Obamacommy, Holder, Sharpton, Jackson, and all the other raceturbators, they have set back race/ethnic relationships some 20 years or more. I thought we were all over this years back...apparently not according to minority leadership, if you can call it leadership.

Meanwhile, they ignore Baltimore experiencing 40 black on black murders in one month, not to mention Detroit, Chicago, Philly, St. Louis, et al. Enough already you racist pr*cks! You want whitey to be a racist? We were over it, but you're pushing us too hard.

FWIW, Blacks are at the bottom of national educational assessments. They are approximately 2 grade levels behind whites and there is extra pressure to graduate them to the next grade level because holding them back would be “racist.” So by the time they graduate high school, too many have failed to earn a high school level of competence. That shakes out in the job market.
There are plenty of individuals and others from other races who are down at the bottom of the scale too - but as an entire cohort, on average, a significant number of blacks are at least 2 grade levels behind whites upon graduation and that can be expected to limit their job fitness. Yes there are brilliant black scholars, but the data indicates that the average of the cohort is lower than the average of white, Asian and Hispanic Cohorts. And I think lower job performance fuels grievance that is used to justify higher crime rates for the cohort. ANd all this attributed to whites actively discriminating against blacks. *sigh*

It took me about two minutes into the video to figure out that the girl was wearing the blonde wig as a prop.

Yep, and that is something that simply has to be fixed. Bold action is what's needed. Unfortunately, current "fixes" don't involve bold action. They involve some combination of throwing money at the problem, and blaming white society.

Oh, and there will also be a few white folks who will mutter "it's not fixable, because that's just the way black folks are." That's as wrong, and as unhelpful, as simply blaming white society.

I'm a veteran urban school teacher. And I'll tell you this. Urban black kids can succeed, if they are held to high standards. That would take time, but it would work.

The problem is that those high standards would be removed the instant some parent or community activist complains.
