This is a time when its necessary to read beyond the headlines. A May 10 Gallup survey shows that the share of Americans calling themselves social liberals has risen to 31% from 25% in 2009, while the share of self-described social conservatives has fallen to 31% from 42%. It is the first time social conservatives have not outnumbered social liberals since Gallup began asking the question in 1999. As recently as 2010, social conservatives led by 17 points.
All this was trumpeted as bad news for Republicans. But whats driving this shift is largely Democrats lurching further leftward. In 2010, more Democrats described themselves as social moderates than social liberals, 41% to 37%. Today, 53% of Democrats are social liberals and 31% social moderates.

Christian conservative to Karl Rove: Drop dead!
This oughta be an interesting thread!
Basically, Mr. Rove will recommend caving on all social issues.
Yeah.
Republicans maybe, conservatives no.
Drop Dead Rove, it is jerks like you that shift your Moral Position on social issues depending on what the latest poll says, instead of doing what is RIGHT, that is destroying the party and the country. please buy 12 feet of rope and USE IT!!
Not taking up the banner of protecting Conservative social issues is hurting Republicans.
+1
When the underclass outnumbers the "tough love" class, it makes perfect sense for the politicians to pander to the underclass.
I've noticed a striking resemblance between the political class and the underclass. Dishonest, low and shifting standards for conduct, false sense of superiority, etc.
Oh shut up, Karl.
The RATS have consistently used the words of an idiot, Todd Akin, against all conservatives. They will continue to do so every election. At times we are our own worst enemy.
Is abortion the only remaining mark of social conservatives?
If so, then it helps the GOP. If it is expanded to include gun control, tax cuts, free trade and eliminating Social security, then it’s a loser.
“You can’t be a fiscal Conservative and not be a social Conservative. A large part of the expanse of government is to make up for a dysfunctional society, because our culture is falling apart, the family is falling apart.” ~ Jim DeMint
this is the same BS trying to balkanize the party into money issues vs moral issues.
conservative is conservative that includes money and social because money pays for social experiments.
Rove is just trying to see which nonjeb candidate can be brainwashed ala Romney.
Become a liberal and call yourself conservative. Yeah, that’s the ticket. FU CR.
FUKR.
Hey, that looks like a bad word.
“A May 10 Gallup survey”
and
“Karl Rove”
NO NEED TO READ FURTHER.
It does, it shows people you have no principles.
If we followed every single passing trend than the Republicans would be trying to buy time on MTV and hocking Giga Pets!
No.
And every 4 years we have to listen to this same sad song.
The answer was no in the 1980s, the 1990s and is still no now.
Only an imbecile would consider this a valid question.
Rove, Romney, Rand Paul, libertarians, rinos.
To them, the enemy is conservatism.
Caving on social issues won’t help, either. It just makes those who do cave “Liberal Light”.
Why have the “light” anything when you can have the real thing? Real liberals will always “out-liberal” us.
