Are Social Issues Hurting Republicans?
Wall Street Journal ^ | June 3, 2015 | Karl Rove

Posted on 06/04/2015 8:45:59 AM PDT by C19fan

This is a time when it’s necessary to read beyond the headlines. A May 10 Gallup survey shows that the share of Americans calling themselves social liberals has risen to 31% from 25% in 2009, while the share of self-described social conservatives has fallen to 31% from 42%. It is the first time social conservatives have not outnumbered social liberals since Gallup began asking the question in 1999. As recently as 2010, social conservatives led by 17 points.

All this was trumpeted as bad news for Republicans. But what’s driving this shift is largely Democrats lurching further leftward. In 2010, more Democrats described themselves as social moderates than social liberals, 41% to 37%. Today, 53% of Democrats are social liberals and 31% social moderates.

This oughta be an interesting thread!

Basically, Mr. Rove will recommend caving on all social issues.

Yeah.

When the underclass outnumbers the "tough love" class, it makes perfect sense for the politicians to pander to the underclass.

I've noticed a striking resemblance between the political class and the underclass. Dishonest, low and shifting standards for conduct, false sense of superiority, etc.

The RATS have consistently used the words of an idiot, Todd Akin, against all conservatives. They will continue to do so every election. At times we are our own worst enemy.

Is abortion the only remaining mark of social conservatives?
If so, then it helps the GOP. If it is expanded to include gun control, tax cuts, free trade and eliminating Social security, then it’s a loser.

this is the same BS trying to balkanize the party into money issues vs moral issues.

conservative is conservative that includes money and social because money pays for social experiments.

Rove is just trying to see which nonjeb candidate can be brainwashed ala Romney.

If you have a linguini spine who goes with the cultural flow more than a river, than yeah.

It does, it shows people you have no principles.

If we followed every single passing trend than the Republicans would be trying to buy time on MTV and hocking Giga Pets!

No.

And every 4 years we have to listen to this same sad song.

The answer was no in the 1980s, the 1990s and is still no now.

Only an imbecile would consider this a valid question.

Rove, Romney, Rand Paul, libertarians, rinos.

To them, the enemy is conservatism.

Caving on social issues won’t help, either. It just makes those who do cave “Liberal Light”.

Why have the “light” anything when you can have the real thing? Real liberals will always “out-liberal” us.
