Tens of thousands of undocumented immigrants in the Dominican Republic -- the vast majority Haitians -- face deportation as a deadline to apply for legal status looms.
The problem of what to do with thousands of workers who entered illegally from a neighboring country is not an unfamiliar one in the hemisphere. The plight of undocumented immigrants in the United States and lawmakers' failed attempts at reform come to mind.
The Dominican government tackled the issue with a "regularization plan" that offered a path to legal status for the undocumented. But critics say it was designed to fail the migrant workers.
Wednesday is the deadline for undocumented immigrants in the Dominican Republic to register under the regularization plan or face deportation.
"Those who do not have documentation will have to return to their country," Dominican Foreign Minister Andres Navarro said.
According to the government, more than 200,000 undocumented immigrants living in the Dominican Republic have registered, but at least that many others will not meet the deadline.
Claims of racial prejudice
The fact that the majority of foreigners -- documented or not -- living in the Dominican Republic are Haitian has led to accusations that there are other racial prejudices involved, too.

If they do deport, we’ll be told how the Conservatives who want to deport illegal immigrants want to lower our country to the level of the cruel, backward, ignorant primitive Dominican Republicans.
Next stop for these poor Haitians will be, wait for it, wait for it, AMERICA!
That's right, America will take in all the worlds poor and the liberal socialist will raise enough taxes on those racist white bastards to pay for them while they march in every liberal socialist city demanding “respect.”
The Haitians should have continued to live off the French who controlled Haiti and was one of the richest countries in south America. They rose up and threw the French out and now they can't even feed themselves!
Racist America will house and feed them, give them free schooling, medical care, clothes, and their babies will become anchor Americans for additional free welfare for life! After all it was those racist white bastards who kept the Haitian down in the first place!

It’s amazing no-one has ever realized the Castro’s have never had a “problem” with Haitians slamming ashore in Cuba.

My best friend, who I was in the Air Force with, and was in the California Department of Corrections with, was from the DR. He is not black. Look at all the DR baseball players. These people will still play the race card.
They not in any way, shape or form the same people nor similar culture. Not even close.
The Haitians are barely above a dysfunctional tribal community.
They cannot be permitted to do to the DR what they did to Haiti.

We should study how the Dominicans do this job. Our government says you can’t round up that many people and deport them. Of course, if you don’t start with the first one, you surely can’t get’er done.
We could take a lesson from the Dominicans.
There is actually a settlement of lily-white Scandinavians who live in the mountains between Haiti and the DR, on the DR side. Never did get to find that settlement.
One year we drove from Port-au-Prince (well, Peguy-ville, technically) to Santo Domingo, with all the proper paperwork, etc. When driving across the border, the DR has a bleach-bath trench that the vehicles must drive through...no Haitian dirt permitted!
That said, there is no love between Haiti and the DR...they have declared war on each other several times in the past, with the Haitian Air Force (!) once dropping bombs on the DR.
Side note...Haiti had three fighters in the mid 1980's that we would watch on "maneuvers" every day. In 1984 two of them collided mid-air over PAP with one craft falling into a schoolyard full of children.
The DR used to bus (actually cattle haul would be a better description) Haitians to the DR once a year for the sugar cane harvest. Unsure if that is still active.
