MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Sports fans may have to leave their Blackhawks, Indians or Redskins gear at home if they plan on entering a Madison public school next year.

Starting this fall, public school students in Wisconsin's capital city cannot wear shirts, hats or other items that display the name, logo or mascot of any team that portrays a "negative stereotype" of American Indians. Those who do must change or face suspension or expulsion.

How is naming your team after them portraying them in a negative light?

Do these people not understand that sports teams and the like are named for things we admire, respect and/or fear.

How that is derogatory to anyone is beyond my comprehension.

They just want to dictate what is acceptable and control you. Dictate and Control. It doesn’t have to make sense. It’s their way or the highway.

Sports team names reflect American history and culture.
What don’t schools stand up against these PC bullies?

Who decides what constitutes a "negative stereotype"?

At UND the Fighting Sioux nickname and logo (done by a native artist), were fought against for nearly a decade by the NCAA before they succumbed. Neither the Spirit Lake Tribe nor most individuals found anything demeaning in either the logo nor the celebration of a warrior heritage.

Who gets to be so smart (and condescending) they can be offended for an entire people (they demean by being offended for them--which implies they aren't smart enough to be offended for themselves)?

Ban Liberals, quick!

Well, here in Wisconsin, most of the public schools think the bullies are right. What is ironic is when this whitewashing of school mascots is done, 20 years later no one will think of the primative Americans as warriors or fighters. They will only think of them as reservation, welfare slugs or operators of casinos. The PC bullies are doing more harm to the reputation of the former primatives than good.

Many schools around Wisconsin have already changed their “indian” names/mascots.

Hm, My children are 50% Mescalero Apache, born in Mescalero, NM, and grew up on a ranch on the edge of the reservation. One is now a grown man, earned the Silver Star in the Army and has a very successful company.

The name of the Reservation football team was the “Braves.”

The district’s dress code says a list of prohibited logos and mascots would be made available before the beginning of the school year. ==

So my shirt will say:

“Here’s the prohibited list - per the School District. Don’t wear these:
Mascot 1
Logo 1
Mascot 2
Logo 2
etc.”

Sheesh.

Entire states have been named for Indians.

(Utah and Indiana come to mind.)

Sadly, Wisconsin is named after the Wisconsin River....which was the term given to the body of water....by the Algonquin Indians. Someone should start a bogus trend to suggest across the state renaming the state “X” to avoid insulting any Indians....I’ll bet that thirty percent of the state’s teenagers quickly pick this up and carry it on for years.

I had some ditz college girl try to dress me down for my Indian Motorcycle shirt. (I actually met Burt Monroe, by the way). I politely told her that the name actually honored them, that individual models even had the desirable characteristics of their namesake. The Chief was big and dignified, the Scout agile etc. I don’t think she understood a word of it.

A High School in eastern WA has Bombers for a mascot. As in B-17.
Folks who made the plutonium for the Nagasaki bomb contributed a days pay to buy one from Boeing for the Air Force. Plane was named Days Pay.
The mascot symbol is a mushroom cloud.

Kind of torques the Seattleites.
