I had r inguinal hernia surgery at USNH 3923 in 1959 and took several ‘souvenirs’. The problem was ‘compounded’ as I figured the ‘discomfort’ to be from the hair growing back in.

My niece had to have the operation. I wish I’d known beforehand as I might have helped her avoid surgery. Treated myself with no further problems.

I somehow got my hand caught between the legs on a filing cabinet and the stubs that were in the deck to hold it in place. A young ensign thought I was in shock so he had me taken to the 3923 dispensary and the Duty Corpsman decided I should have stitches to close the cuts etc. He started to swab the area and I asked what he was doing and he said ‘going to give you some Novocaine(?) to numb the area before I stitch it.
Now, I am deathly ‘afraid’ of needles so I opted to go with JUST the stitching. He made a comment that even Marines numb the area first and I made a comment about how the Marines must have been some kind of ‘cat’ .
He got it done, I was in misery and he looked to admire his work and pulled HARD on the ‘needle’. Seems like he had ‘forgotten’ to tie the ‘knot’ so...I needn’t go any further.
Found out later that the ‘powers that be’ weren’t buying that file cabinet story and were convinced the ONLY way I could have screwed up my hand/knuckles so bad was to have hit someone in the mouth.....I was the ‘leading RM so they figured there was no way I would have been doing ‘physical labor’....<: <: <:
