CRUZ: This July 4th, Americans Want to Believe Again

HOUSTON, Texas — U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, released the following statement in observance of Independence Day:

“If you are like me and pay attention to the news every day, you can easily be overwhelmed by all the simultaneous events that seem to indicate an impending American decline. But I don’t believe that. Everywhere I go, I see it in their faces and hear it in their voices. Americans want to believe again.

“On this July 4th, I want to share with you my hope for America.

“In the summer of 1776, Patriots gathered to dissolve the political bonds they had with England and declare their independence. The bold call for independence presupposed that the colonists were equal in station to the British Empire. They listed their grievances as justification for the split.

“The fifty-six signers from the thirteen colonies affixed their signatures to the document. It could only mean one thing – war. Indeed, the American Revolution came.

“Today, we live out the Founder’s promise to America – that a free people pursuing their dreams would lead to limitless possibilities.

“My father came to America from Cuba in 1957. He had very little money, and spoke little English. My Irish-Italian mother was the daughter of working class parents. Both my parents worked hard and were the first to graduate from college. In a single generation, their son became a United States Senator and now I am running for President of the United States. That could only happen in America.

“What I understand is that story is not unique. Most Americans have a similar story in their family history.

“These stories demonstrate how America is truly the land of limitless opportunity. The Fourth of July always reminds me of the opportunity America gave my family, and I ask myself, ‘What have I done today to ensure that same opportunity exists for future generations?’ We’re an exceptional nation, and it is up to each of us to keep it that way.

“Happy Fourth!”

I was reading recently an old Britannica article on the Puritans:

“The Puritan mind was one of the toughest the world has ever had to deal with. It is inconceivable to conceive of a disillusioned Puritan; no matter what misfortune befell him, no matter how often or how tragically his fellowmen failed him, he would have been prepared for the worst, and expected no better.”

And kept fighting. Like Ted Cruz.

It is also inconceivable to conceive of a Puritan that wanted somebody else to pay for everything for him; my, how we have fallen...

A lot of the fall could be due to the fact that as a society ages, it accumulates a lot of deadweight that’s almost impossible to get rid of.

But coming here to the new world, the Puritans could start fresh, and had to be self-reliant, and that legacy lasted a surprisingly long time.

I want to believe again . . but I can’t right now. My wife and I are nominally celebrating the 4th of July in respect for the 239 years of freedom and sacrifice our founding fathers gave us. It is obvious that we could not keep it. with SCOTUS ruling against the Bible and A President out to destroy America. And with the institutions of marriage, fidelity, and hard work being sneered at by Democrats, I find little hope now except in the Word of God. Ted Cruz is my candidate. but will the welfare-fed liberals and the millenials who have been savaged by microagression vote for a decent reaganeque candidate? Will we accept decency and patriotism in the white House again?

It did last a long time, but opening their doors to immigrants from other cultures (my own included) sealed their doom.

As long as we had the melting pot, things were okay. During the immigration time-out from 1920 to 1965, people were assimilated into an American culture. People identified as Americans.

Now though, we have to bow down at the altar of diversity, which, far being a blessing, is a force for disunity and violence (not to mention expense!).

Earlier immigrants certainly strove to assimilate (in terms of language, work ethic); today the remnants of the WASP culture are expected to be conversant in the cultures around the globe that send their Least Valuable Players here to this country...

Least valuable is right!

My favorite example of a multicultural empire is the Austrian empire.

They used Latin as their language of gov’t administraion until 1784, when the emperor Joseph II, who was an “enlightened despot” like Frederick the Great, replaced Latin with German, because he thought the Germans were the most “advanced” ethnic group in the empire, and he wanted a modern, centralized state.

Well, the result of this was to make everyone in the empire more conscious of their ethnicity, whereas before, it wasn’t such a big deal. Eventually, ethnic conflicts were to bring down the empire.

The Hungarian part of the empire kept Latin until 1846 for their internal Hungarian governmental affairs, then switched to Hungarian.

That was even worse than German, because Hungarian, a non-Indo-European language, is very hard to learn, and Hungary had a lot of ethnic minorities who were bullied by the Hungarians.

The empire broke up after WW1, and the old central European parts of the empire became the killing grounds of WW2.

Even Austria-Hungary had a tiered structure for minorities; the Hungarians were practically on par with the Austrians themselves, and together they dominated the rest. Austria itself was so involved because when the two most powerful German states battled to head all of them, Prussia won and Austria had to seek power elsewhere.

Bismarck handled that masterfully.

He knew it’d take a war to get Austria out of German affairs, but he made a generous peace with them so that they’d be allies.

If only he’d done the same with France, and not taken Alsace-Lorraine!

And later, if Germany had not tried to compete with Britain over naval armaments, we might have avoided WW1.

There was simply no way to counter the alliance system arrayed against the new Germany; agreements/relations with Russia and Italy in particular came to naught when war approached...
