Pets become family members. Hell, they’re more trustworthy than most people are.
An old boss of mine (not the one you know of Impy) had a wake and funeral (complete with homemade Mass cards) at his house when his cat died. I was away on vacation when the cat died, so I didn’t go, but there was an envelope with a card in it on my desk waiting for me when I returned.

My wife left, but my sheltie stayed for another 10 years. My border collie could open the fridge, and bring me a diet Pepsi or a Sam Adams without piercing the can, and expect nothing in return. Now, how many wives would do that ?

In this day & age? Not too many.
Lol.
My mom’s aunt (dementia) was put in a home near her daughter. She and the kids visited her a lot. I presume it was a nice one, cause my cousin is loaded.
My grandma (who got an infection and died during a long terrible recovery after aneurysm surgery, my family considered suing the care facility) very much wanted to stay in her house. At least she didn’t have to spend her last years in some kennel for old people. I wish she hadn’t had the surgery, she’d have survived longer and not spent her last months in a bed with a machine breathing for her.
A friend of my mom’s had a husband that got early-onset Alzheimer’s, RIGHT after they got married. He became belligerent and she had to put him in a home, terrible.
That was a good doggie!
Heartbreaking.
:(
I knew how to pick my dogs : )
