Jefferson Davis and other Confederate leaders were indicted but not brought to trial. The political environment was problematic. Having won the war was enough, and nobody wanted to push for trials and risk the political blowback. Also, Johnson kept issuing pardons, and that could have gotten in the way of trials.
She’s a witch all right, but a carpetbagger? She was born in South Carolina.
“. . .nobody wanted to push for trials and risk the political blowback.”
You are right. There were no trials and no convictions. There is a lot of loose talk today about “treason”, but it is just that - loose talk.
Historians say one reason there were no trials is because it was feared Davis would be aquitted - either at trial or appeal. After all, there was no law and only a weak Constitutional argument against secession. The record is clear - northern statesmen at times had spoken in favor of secession. Of course, the north could have had victor’s justice but, looking back, there clearly appears to have been some element of decency in the north.
At last, there will not be another racial incident in South Carolina forever....we all know that it was influence of that evil piece of cloth that has caused unrest since it went up
NCAA just said that they will return to South Carolina after the boycott. I wonder how much money South Carolina lost because they seem to be saying that South Carolina might get a billion dollars during 2015-2016 due to this flag being taken down. I wonder if the Governor was looking at the decision from a budget decision.
Well you are correct......you can only run for Governor twice in a row and she was just reelected for her second term so you are right she will not be reelected in 2018 as she won’t be able to run at that time. Her last day as Governor will be in January 2019.
SC Governor’s Race. The governor of South Carolina is elected to serve a four-year term. The state constitution limits a person to holding the office to two consecutive terms.
South Carolina citizens
Elected that POS.
Twice.....don’t worry she will be gone in January 2019.
It passed with a veto proof majority....over 80 percent. Her hands were tied.
The nazi flag was the flag of the national socialist party, the German flag looks nothing like it. The Confederate battle flag, on the other hand, represented a segment of the American people who were basically stressing states rights over those of the Federal government. It has certainly been misused over the years to represent whatever the misuser wanted it to...slavery, segregation, racism, but that was primarily by the Democrat party.
It's a good thing that the South Carolina murderer did not wave a cross or they'd have closed the churches.
Doesn’t sound like govt. for the people. The flying of the Stars and Bars should be voted upon by the citizens of SC.
Next week the word Rebel or the act of Rebelling will be be met with swift arrest and incarceration.
Govt knows best an all
I have never owned or flown a Rebel Flag before, I will in the future. At the house on my clothes and on my truck.
TT
PS I’m like Jrandomfreeper when it comes to wearing clothes so that may just be a flag on a ballcap. But if I have to wear a shirt I’m gonna find some Rebel shirts.
Your point would be what? She had not intention of not singing the bill. I hope all 80% lose their jobs at the next opportunity in both houses. I have no love for the Army of Northern Virginia's battle flag but it flew over a Confederate war memorial. That is the same damn thing the Islamist did in Afghanistan and Iraq. They are absolutely no different. Certainly doesn't make me proud to be an American.
