Florida toll booth worker fired for paying driver's $5 toll
Orlando Sentinel ^ | July 20, 2015 | By Adrienne Cutway

A beloved Florida toll booth worker was fired after nearly 30 years of service for paying a driver's $5 toll, according to NBC-2.

Vladislav "Sam" Samsonov was working his regular shift at the Boca Grande Causeway when he accidentally charged a trailer driver the wrong amount, so he paid the $5 deficit out of his own pocket. Samsonov told the TV station that he'd been warned not to do this before, but had never been formally written up.

The Gasparilla Island Bridge Authority told Samsonov he'd need to work two days a week instead of five as punishment. When he denied that offer, Samsonov was fired.

Drivers who knew Samsonov for giving lollipops to their children and bones to their dogs have been posting messages online letting the 77-year-old veteran know how much his service was appreciated. . .

If he worked for a teacher’s union, no way they could fire him. Why does this man deserve less rights than teachers?

I heard about this somewhere else and they said the real problem is that the toll collectors are not supposed to have their own cash on them while they’re on duty.

“Samsonov told the TV station that he’d been warned not to do this before, but had never been formally written up.”

Well, verbal warnings from employers don’t work and any jury would side with the old dude. When we rid our company of liberals, we had to write bogus written warnings right after obamatard won. Stupid bastards destroying my country. I hate liberals and hope they starve. Umm, wait I was just joking (cough/eyes looking to the side)

In the world today, Good Samaritans (aka “Nice Guys”) don’t just finish last; they get screwed.

Relationships, too.

If you’re the kind of guy who believes in doing the right thing, no matter what; you’ve got to C3 (Camouflage, Cover and Conceal) to protect yourself from the wolves and sharks. Or perhaps that analogy should be “zombies and vampires” (democrat voters).

;-)

I suspect they wanted this guy fired before this incident even occurred. They were looking for an excuse, because he was 77 years old and if they couldn’t come up with some good reason, he could sue for ageism. He might still do this if a good lawyer comes to his aid.

A taste of Jeb Bush’s Florida? If so, what would he do to America?

I hate toll booths. I always give them the EXACT change rather than convenience them and round-up to the nearest dollar. And I ain’t signing up for that Easy Pass either. Friggin’ governments will just piss the money away on bike trails or “green” spaces and crap.

I don’t need an EZ pass all that often, so I don’t have one.

I was in PA last year on the turnpike, and I was surprised to see that some of the minor exits could not be used—they were EZ Pass Only! You had to drive to a bigger cash plus EZ pass exit.

There is no sadder group of a******s than mindless bureaucrats with 50 IQ.

So long as there is no loss to the bridge/road district, what harm has been done?

They are throwing up tollbooths all over the Eastern Seaboard so I had no choice but get an EZ Pass. I would go insane having to constantly stop at tollbooths and fish out the necessary cash from my wallet. It's not like it's a quarter or two either. Some of the tolls in NYC area run $12-15 just for a bridge or tunnel.

Fortunately it's almost all business travel so I just PDF my weekly transactions and email them to my employer for reimbursement.

It never stops in the so-called USA: “No good deed goes unpunished.” Not surprised it’s FL either

People in TX are excited over a third Bush coming? I don’t think he will make it.

Pretty sad. Boca Grande is an Island of Billionaires. Some poor 77 year old guy working and trying to correct a mistake. He should have just screwed the Island out of the $5.

On the PA turnpike, it costs about 20% more for paying cash v Easy Pass. They want to eliminate the over paid union slump toll collectors.

I'm still trying to determine what his offense was.

I'm also anxious to find out how much he sues the authority for unauthorized firing.
