The number of Americans filing new applications for unemployment benefits increased last week, but remained near cycle lows in a sign that the jobs market was gaining steam.
Initial claims for state unemployment benefits increased 12,000 to a seasonally adjusted 267,000 for the week ended July 25, the Labor Department said Thursday. Claims for the prior week were unrevised at 255,000, which was the lowest level since November 1973.
A Labor Department analyst said there were no special factors influencing the data and that only claims for Puerto Rico had been estimated.
The four-week moving average of claims, considered a better measure of labor market trends as it irons out week-to-week volatility, fell 3,750 to 274,750 last week.

Without the labor participation rate as a context jobless claim numbers are meaningless.
{{DRINK!}
Here’s a tip for the Labor Department. Why in the hell don’t you just make up all the weekly numbers from now until that Muslim is out of office?
It would be much better on you and you’d only have to lie your ass off just once and be done with it.
No doubt an unthinking MSM will celebrate this as an Obozo victory. They don’t want to dig below the numbers and see how many are underemployed or have been forced to take part time jobs. Nor do they want to net out the Discourage Workers who simply gave up looking for work because their prospects are so dismal. I just wonder how many college graduates are waiting tables, flippin’ burgers, or driving cabs when, in better times, they would be making four times as much in jobs for which they were trained. The MSM has the IQ of dust and an agenda for Their Leader.
