'Anti-gun stupidity': Honolulu destroys $575G worth of police firearms
Fox News ^ | August 31,2015 | Hollie McKay

Second Amendment advocates are firing away at a decision by Honolulu officials to destroy $575,000 worth of perfectly good handguns in a move one critic called the “height of anti-gun stupidity.”

Some 2,300 Smith & Wesson 9 mm handguns, including at least 200 that are brand-new and in unopened boxes, were issued to the city’s police department. But with the 2,200-member force upgrading to lighter and less expensive Glock 17s, the guns were set to be permanently holstered. While it is customary throughout the country for departments to auction the guns to law-abiding citizens, including the police who once carried them, or donate them to another department, Honolulu opted to destroy them.

“Mayor Kirk Caldwell and the Honolulu Police Department agreed that they would not allow the guns to be sold to the general public and end up on the streets of Honolulu,” Honolulu Police spokeswoman Michelle Yu told FoxNews.com. “The same goes for selling the individual gun parts that could have been used to assemble a gun.”

I'd almost be for letting highly liberal Hawaii separate and try being their own nation at this point.

I’d let all the liberal states leave, and let the purple states with a definite red and blue area (like FL, CA, and WA) split.

It’d be easy and somewhat natural to say Aloha (which ESPN taught us means goodbye) to Hawaii. Not connected to the 48 states, just an island (well actually a collection of islands) like Puerto Rico or American Samoa.

...lighter and less expensive Glock 17s,

How much lighter? Ten pounds? There can't be that much difference in weight. And if the expense is such a consideration, how long will it take to recoup the 575,000 dollars worth of guns they destroyed?

Sweet.... let it happen. Let those foolish people running the state go the way of Puerto Rico, and then let them cry asking what happened.

I mean I’m sure there’s good people there. But liberal thinking seems to dominate most of their government and voting.

Besides, they should just leave for giving us Obama anyway. =P

I’d hate to be a taxpayer in Hawaii; apparently they don’t need the money. This will continue until our parasitic liberal utopias are starved of revenue.

I think maybe a recent example a coworker used about Muslims who apparently (from what he said) are free to “gay rape” an “infidel”- like ambassador Stevens.

I asked if they stone themselves or throw themselves off buildings afterwards and he said there was no use applying logic to the illogical.

$575G’s wasted. The opportunity for safer communities and citizenry who sleep easier at night goes by the wayside.

Of course the article says too that gun violence in Hawaii isn’t a problem to begin with, statistically speaking. But selling these guns, or even donating or selling them to other law enforcement, which apparently WASN’T EVEN OFFERED to the state sheriff’s department was an impossiblity.

So, basically - they burned more than half a million in taxpayer money.

Another Cuba. You might as well hand it over to
China or embargo it for life. The ONLY thing Hawaii is
good for is as a strategic military base.

I was told that the M-59 is prone to jam, I can't make it happen with any load I've tried. The OEM barrel bushing was two pieces brazed together. It finally came unstuck and was replaced with an investment cast late model part.

It looks grungy, but it was never carried to piano recitals, it lived on salt spray and sweat.
