Yeah. HP was THE top company in the US, until Carly took over. NOT!!
“...lower-cost international labor is also lower-skill...”
HAH! PHDs in the technical arts are a dime-a-dozen from India. There is nothing low-skilled about them!!
That's not who's getting most H-1Bs.
Under this system, employers classify
Notice that H-1B workers are "highly skilled" when industry wants more of them, but those very same workers become low-skilled when determining what they have to be paid.
Maybe you are, but that six and a half year stint without a paycheck after being displaced by THREE H-1Bs didn't help my net wealth one little bit.
Ouch—I feel your pain.
But if you were a tech worker all the way back to the ‘60s—my hat off to you?
Not quite, started tech work in ‘72.
To be clear, I in no way support this type of program when US jobs are being eliminated. Thx.
Re: “Whose massive investment? Do you not think that is not already being made?”
Corporate investment.
And, no, I don’t.
CNBC had a good article last week.
More than 50% of USA restaurant employees are foreign born.
Since 2000, productivity gain per employee is ZERO.
Adjusted for inflation, each employee generates $83,000 of revenue, the same as 2000.
Do I need to tell you what happened to restaurant wages and benefits since 2000, or will you just plug your ears and make shrill noises?
Adjusted for inflation, down 10%.
That’s because they’ve got such cheap (illegal) labor.
But you were talking about investments in more efficient code and system production. Restaurants don’t make those investments, tech companies do.
Again, are you looking for some sort of federal investment in this area?
Thanks for the clarification, Sarge! I hope I didn't give the impression that I thought you were a Free Traitor; it's just strange to see as much opposition to America-for-Americans as we do on a site for American conservatism.
Re: “Again, are you looking for some sort of federal investment in this area?”
Never.
Government funding should always be confined to basic research, and, perhaps, applied research in physics, physical chemistry, and mathematics.
My two top political issues for the last 10 years have been massive legal immigration and work visas, which have crushed the wage scale for low skill labor and for IT jobs, and have also crushed the corporate incentive to invest in labor saving devices and software, and have also supplied the Democrat Party with 20 million new Socialist voters.
I anger almost everyone at Free Republic when I admit that I am quietly rooting for the $15 minimum wage because it will totally destroy the economic rationale for massive legal immigration, and it will force low skill businesses to dramatically increase their capital expenditures.
We saw when Trump spoke out about illegal aliens, how corporations tried to silence him and sent out a message to the rest of the country: You will be punished if you aren't PC. Macy's, NASCAR, PGA, ESPN, others. Only Trump is too rich for them to have an impact.
You’re rightt about the voters and limited innovation and cap investment.
Immigration is my top issue too.
Not so sure that $15 minimum wage...
No problem! This globalization crap has really hurt Americans while improving the lives of non-citizens. It’s just wrong, and needs to be stopped.
