Almost exactly seven years ago, House Speaker John Boehner said of the Wall Street bailout bill, I think this thing is a crap sandwich but hed vote for it anyway. I remarked at the time, Its crap sandwiches for as far as the eye can see and I was right.
Boehner finally had his fill of the meal, opting to push away from the table, as it were. On Friday, he announced hell be resigning the speakership and his seat. (snip)
Meanwhile, it appears the dogs have no idea what to do now that theyve caught the car. If the plan was to take Boehners scalp, hang the Mission Accomplished banner. If the plan was to really change things at the top, it appears Boehners enemies came up short.(snip)
The other potential replacements Jim Jordan (R., Ohio), Jeb Hensarling (R., Texas), and Daniel Webster (R., Fla.) are solid conservatives with a much deeper grasp of policy than McCarthy ... In the realm of the plausible, Id probably pick Hensarling. Fortunately, as a columnist, I dont have to stay within the guardrails of the plausible. So heres an idea.(snip)
Gingrich was the architect of the Contract with America. He led Republicans to the first congressional majority in 40 years. His speakership was not without faults, but Gingrich has matured. At 72, he is literally an elder statesman of the party and still one of its most gifted communicators.

No ... Juan ... I don't see that ......
I love this idea. But it will never happen.
But why can’t they VACATE THE SEAT right now before Boehner successfully funds another lib cause? Forget the resignation, vacate it now.
As an added bonus, if Gingrich were to accept the speakership (which will not be offered this is pure speculation), that acceptance would token a commitment to put a stop to Obama's depredations.
Won’t happen.
Because he can’t be trusted.
These days he’s going around the country with Van Jones complaining that lots of blacks are in prison because of our racist laws.
Predictable, the nattering nabobs of negativity were in with the “never happen” meme immediately.
What these shallow thinkers don’t understand is the possibilities raised by a radical idea. Will it happen this time? No - but it’s a substantive question nonetheless.
Just three weeks ago, Boehner’s resignation would “never happen” either. Until it did. Sometimes you have to plant your flag way out in front. That’s what this idea does.
That’s ‘Bad Newt’ who is doing that. I’m talking about ‘Good Newt’. Oh ... wait ...
That's the fact, Jack!
I was a Constituent of Newt - he was my congressman during his entire tenure in the House.
I heard him say in his own words (at the time of the Clinton/Lewinsky scandal) “I’ll hold President Clinton responsible for his actions, ethically, morally and legally......[paraphrased]”
It was shortly thereafter that his “baggage” ended up around his ankles (as in pants-around) with his now-wife Callista of whom he dotingly speaks every chance he gets. We all know the outcome of that.
Frankly, I could think of one or more “symbolic” candidates myself.
No.
It's a media game and we should use it.
It would never happen because he couldn’t get enough Republican votes.
Not surprising that Jonah Goldberg is pushing Newt. If I remember right, he was leading some kind of health care outfit that was all in for Obamacare way back. Newt also has been complimentary of his good friend Hillary. No way Newt.
Newt, great idea, he won’t be afraid of Obama
One day he is ok
The next he does something you scratch head on what he is doing
Besides been there, done that, didn't end pretty.
