Trade deal looms large for 2016

The 2016 presidential field is all over the map when it comes to a massive trade agreement recently struck between the U.S. and 11 other Pacific Rim nations.

Negotiators announced finalized terms for the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) Monday, concluding nearly six years of talks.

Congress will have the chance early next year to vote on the trade deal, but the accord already looms large in the race to replace President Obama.

The reaction from the 2016 field to the trade talks has been a complex one. Democrats have felt significant pressure from environmental groups and labor unions fiercely opposed to the accord. Meanwhile, Republican candidates have struggled to strike a balance between support for free trade in general and the mistrust among GOP voters toward granting Obama more power on anything.

With the announcement of a completed deal full of complex details just hours old, candidates have been slow to chime in on the matter. But indications of their overall trade stance could be seen in the heated summer battle in Congress over trade promotion authority (TPA), which narrowly passed and gave Obama the “fast-track” authority necessary to finalize the pact.

Trade must be a boon for our nation as well as others.

If it’s a boon for them and doom for us, lets take a pass.

We have too many people out of work. These trade deals haven’t been good for us.

NAFTA, China, Japan... are our trade deals putting U. S. workers to work?

NO!

Then why have them?

This S needs to stop right now!

I’ve been told a vote for TPA demonstrates solid conservative principals. So TPP must be good for America, right?

Something I can’t figure out is why it takes massive amounts of time and money and years of work to come up with a way to do something that has been going on for at least 6000 years.

Okay, then we’re talking balanced trade for the most part?

I don't know ... I'm not financially minded and it asll confuses me

We send money to mama on a regular basis and we get a printout of the transaction with the current exchange rate

I forget the number .... last week it was almost 47 Phil peso to the dollar (I think 46.90 something) and now it is 46.30 something

You’re referencing the exchange rate.

The dollar continually fluctuates with other currencies.

When we trade with other nations, I want their economy and population to benefit. I want our population and economy to benefit.

Trade won’t always be balanced, but it should be close. Severely lopsided trade overall is destructive.

Lots of palms to be greased and forward looking plans to make sure it works as planned...

Think IMF and many other elements that have to be baked in and simulated before anything can go forward..

Elements like Global Warming or other add-ons are probably tucked away ...

I would never sign anything this old, the world has changed right underneath them and they are getting ready to go where???

Madness, all driven by Power & Greed...

King Solomon was right, Vanity, all is vanity...What does it matter how much you have, you will find it is never enough and leaves you thirsting for more
