A large deployment of ships that Russia sent to the eastern Mediterranean under the guise of naval exercises at the end of September are actually being used to provide an aerial defense zone for Russian jets, Sam LaGrone reports for USNI News.
The "Black Sea-based Russian surface action group" in the eastern Mediterranean are based along Syria's coast by the Bassel al-Assad Airport and the Tartous naval facility, which is home to a Russian port.
The ships are intended to provide aerial defense for the Russian aircraft that Moscow is currently using to carry out airstrikes against Syrian rebels throughout the country.
Although not directly stated by official channels, the aerial defense zone is likely intended as defense against hypothetical US or coalition airstrikes against the Russian airstrips.

Ships can be sunk by torpedoes, mines, bombs, missiles and gunfire.
Do you want to pull the trigger on the Russians?
You’re one of the biggest Putin butt kissers on the site, so-called “Navy Patriot”.
Where did I say “us?”
Hmmm. Does ISIS have an air force? Nope.
So, they are hardening against someone else. Who would want to AND who could nail Russian airplanes using an air attack.
Who could: US, Israel or Turkey.
Who would want to [and why]: ???
That was my question... against whom?
So.. that has me thinking that it’s against us. But we wouldn’t attack them for what they are currently doing. So what are they getting ready to do?
It shows they are prepared for anything unlike us at the moment, hell all we have is to fund Islamic nuts who behead people and let ISIS create their little empire.
I don’t know how good the Russian troops and equipment are, but their leaders are doing quite a job on this operation.
Control.....advance. Control.....advance. Use Combined Arms.
Thorough and methodical.
The Saudis and Qataris also have air forces and are also virulently anti-Assad (to say nothing of the Saudis animus toward the Russian oil industry).

In a phone interview with CNN Tuesday evening, Trump claimed that theres something in the Iran deal that people dont understand saying if someone attacks Iran, we have to come to their defense.
Does that include Israel? Trump asked. And most people say yes, they dont have an exclusion for Israel. So if Israel attacks Iran, according to that deal, I believe, the way it reads, unless they have a codicil or they have something to it, that we have to fight with Iran against Israel. ..."
Trump was most probably referring to language highlighted by the opponents of the deal. On page 142, the deal includes a clause that states, Co-operation through training and workshops to strengthen Irans ability to protect against, and respond to nuclear security threats, including sabotage, as well as to enable effective and sustainable nuclear security and physical protection systems.
Washington-based Center for Security Policy asserted that Annex III appears to commit the United States and other world powers to the defense of Irans nuclear program.

As the Pentagon warily eyes a Russian military build-up in Syria, Western intelligence sources tell Fox News that the escalated Russian presence began just days after a secret Moscow meeting in late July between Irans Quds Force commander their chief exporter of terror and Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Fox News has learned Quds head Qassem Soleimani and Putin discussed such a joint military plan for Syria at that meeting, an encounter first reported by Fox News in early August. ...
The Quds Force is the international arm of Irans Revolutionary Guard, involved in exporting terrorism to Irans proxies throughout the Middle East including Lebanon, Syria, Iraq and Yemen. ...
Officials who have monitored the build-up say theyve seen more than 1,000 Russian combatants some of them from the same plainclothes Special Forces units who were sent to Crimea and Ukraine. Some of these Russian troops are logistical specialists and needed for security at the expanding Russian bases.
These are most likely the guys who were involved in that incident with the Israeli F15’s yesterday. The administration was trying to characterize it as a deliberate provocation, the Russians probably just saw them coming up the coast and scrambled air assets to protect their base. Pretty predictable response.
Is that you Senator McCarthy?
They’re anticipating us declaring a no fly zone. We’re less likely to risk it if they have formidable assets to resist it.
The Israelis have been flying off the coast, and over Syria for some time now. Russians warned them away from a base yesterday.
Well, I guess the de-conflicting is complete. Doesn’t sound like 0bama or Kerry were consulted, though!
“BI continues their shilling for Obama..”
I don’t see that in this article.
Thanks for keeping your Homofascista shill on the job, George.
