Yale researcher offers resource to would-be mass shooters

Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders Tuesday night during the first round of Democratic debates said the mentally ill in this country need more support. The comment came in response to a question asked about mass shootings like the one that claimed 10 lives – including the shooter – and injured nine others earlier this month at a community college in Oregon.

While Sanders didn’t lay out any specific plans, he did say that health insurance should be provided to all Americans regardless of income.

One Yale researcher, who himself struggled with the urge to kill, created a resource for would-be killers going through tough times in an attempt to help reduce the amount of fatal incidents like mass shootings.

Psychiatry lecturer James Kimmel Jr. launched SavingCain.org to help people struggling with that same impulse.

“We’re aware of suicide prevention websites, but what about sites for people who are considering committing murder?” Kimmel told The Daily Beast. “That’s something that needs to be corrected, to help dissuade them from taking that last, fatal step.”

Mass shooters have typically been individuals who have felt isolated from society and somehow wronged by peers or the system.

Kimmel’s website seeks to avoid demonizing a potential killer, letting them know their life matters.

“We’re using that kind of language, as opposed to saying, ‘You’re terrible, you’re subhuman,’” Kimmel said. “There’s been no website like this, or seeming effort to reach out to people right before they’re about to kill.”

The website also offers a help line that those in crisis can call to get help and lists several resources and links to inspirational Buddhist videos to help inspire a love of life.

Saving Cain plays on the Biblical story of Cain and Abel, which tells of a jealous brother who kills his younger sibling because God favors him.

Kimmel recounted his own craving to kill. When he was in high school in Pennsylvania, Kimmel had a brush with bullies. He said he was continuously harassed and attacked, the bullies going as far as killing his dog, The Daily Beast reported. One night, the bullies blew up his mailbox, so Kimmel chased them in his car. He had them cornered with his headlights shining on them, a gun on his hand, finger on the trigger.

“I had a flash of realization that if I killed them, I’d be killing myself—either figuratively or literally or both,” Kimmel said. “I could see into my future. It was just enough to make me go, ‘No, you’re just going to make it worse.’”

Because many of the past mass shootings were planned, Kimmel hopes his website will turn up in a potential killer’s web searches and deter them from carrying out their deadly deed.

He means well. From the word “resource” in the headline, I thought he was setting up some sort of data base to aid these guys in achieving their aims.

>>Mass shooters have typically been individuals who have felt isolated from society and somehow wronged by peers or the system.

People have been wronged by their peers and isolated since the beginning of civilization. The difference today is:

1) The increase in single parent households
2) The virtual bans on masculine behavior in schools (which results in not learning the valuable lessons of consequences)
3) Participation trophies
4) The over-valuation of a child’s opinions before they have a chance to develop wisdom.

So, you wind up with young men with the social skills of an adolescent girl and the urges of a teenage boy combined with an overblown sense of importance and a sense of superiority and entitlement. In their mind, it is their right to kill others. We are raising a generation of sociopaths. The ones who don’t go on a killing spree demonstrate their tendencies on the road. They don’t care about rules, laws, your safety, or even their own. They just think they deserve to be first in line and the rest of us don’t.

They don’t need more coddling. That’s what created them. They just need to walk in to the place they choose to commit mass murder and discover that the victims are armed and ready. The lesson should be swift and final. Problem solved.

You are so right.

I’ve often said that if it be known that there are armed personnel in every school in our country, school shootings would soon be a thing of the past.

The sense of entitlement has to be one of the worst sins in the book.

You are absolutely 100% correct about the coddling and sense of entitlement.
Contemporary kids have been led to believe they can do virtually *anything* without consequence.
As an experiment, visit a mall, theater, or wherever kids hangout.
Hold the door open for a few and see if anyone says, "Thank you!" or even nods in appreciation. They won't.
That same behavior manifests itself in the other far worse and societally-damaging things they do, too.

I’ve seen it too. Everyone gets upset about the extremely rare school shooter, but no one ever questions the anti-social behaviors that these kids exhibit almost continually. When their uncontrolled 2 year old is demanding obedience from every adult in the room, all you hear from the parents is, “aww, he’s just exerting his individuality”.

Yes it is—the kind of individuality that will make him grow up thinking that everyone is his inferior and just an object to be used, abused, or discarded.

Hour upon hour of simulated head shots complete with tissue splatter and blood spray. Just a game?

I hope these guys are trustworthy. This is a wonderful and needed service to our society.

However, they don’t have the confessional protection of a Catholic Priest so they could be dragged into court for knowing about a man’s plan to commit mass murder and not reporting it to the police.

They are taking a risk with their own lives.

It is if you were raised to respect authority, understand consequences, and treat others as you want to be treated. I play violent video games and have for 33 years and don’t kill people.

But if you don’t have those three virtues I listed above, then the games are just trainers for those who are ready to take their sociopathy to the ultimate level.

I don’t know exactly how many people in the US are mentally deficient. But statistically they are pretty damn safe. While there’s lots of hype, yearly there are not much more than a handful of actual mass murderers in the US.

Compare their (nuts) track record against young black males.

How many young black male murderers are their in the US?

So, then there should be a MSA, Mass Shooters Anonymous.

They could get together and sit in chairs in a circle, and talk out their shootings, vent their frustrations, and improve their mental health.

I’ll tell you what else is wrong: The Ten Commandments and the Golden Rule are banned in the classroom!

When I was a kid, every classroom FRom kindergarten thru my senior year in High School (1959) had The Ten Commandments and the Golden Rule displayed very prominently!

We were taught the difference between right and wrong!

IMHO, if kids are not exposed to and taught good manners and how to become productive members of society, they will neither have good manners nor will they be productive members of society.

The Ten Commandments and the Golden Rule are the foundation for both behaviors, and are, IMHO necessary building blocks for having good character.

So he’s suggesting the urge to kill can be resisted?
Preposterous.
Every urge must be acted upon.
Killers are “born that way.” /s

Good idea.

First recommendation: Put the first bullet in your head.
