When CBS’s 60 Minutes Wednesday broadcast its lead story—reported by Dan Rather and produced by Mary Mapes—on the evening of September 8, 2004, it was given the anodyne title “For the Record,” as though it constituted little more than a disinterested historical footnote. In reality, the story was a bold fabrication about President George W. Bush’s long-ago service in the Texas National Guard, intended to damage him in his campaign for reelection against John Kerry.

Within hours of the broadcast, after CBS News posted online PDF copies of four memos highlighted in the segment, the story began to fall apart...

Now that the laughable "Documentary" Tru^th is opening in "select theaters," it's time to revisit events from one of the finest days in the History of Free Republic [and counter-revolutionary pajama journalism.] In the first of two articles, we reconsider Dan Rather and Mary Mapes preposterous expose .

Wasn’t there more wrong with the “memos” than just the font and subscripts? I seem to recall that the format wasn’t milspec (or what would be expected of a longtime military man) and that the content and even timeline made no sense.

While I was around to watch all this unfold...it’s a bit of a faint memory!

The whole hoax was so completely inept, from the font, the superscripts, the kerning, the supposed chain of possession of the documents, their acquisition, the idiotic "authenticators" who hadn't really seen the originals, ...

A complete clown show from beginning to end. The only thing missing was a beepy-horn and a little car.

Please remind me what 60 Minutes can fabricate document to make a point on a story about George Bush, but an anti-Planned Parenthood group can not use stock footage to illustrate the butchery in the womb that Planned Parenthood does every day.
