Ex-Sen. Tom Coburn Slams 'Cruz Effect' For Creating False Hopes About Congress
Newsmax ^ | 10/16/15 | Todd Beamon

Posted on 10/16/2015 2:23:35 PM PDT by VinL

Former Oklahoma Sen. Tom Coburn slammed what he called "the Cruz effect" — saying ... Cruz's rhetoric and [his] inability to follow through on his promises have caused great disenchantment among Americans toward Congress.

"I call it 'the Cruz effect,'" Coburn [said]. "When you tell people you can accomplish something that you can't — for example, shutting down the government over the Affordable Care Act," Coburn said.

"When, in fact, you promise people in your speeches and your talk that we can do this, and — by dinghy — we're gonna get rid of the Affordable Care Act, and all we have to do is shut down the government."

"Well, that's one thing to tell 'em that. It's a whole other thing to be able to accomplish that, and build a coalition that once you shut it, that it doesn't get opened up till you win."

So what happens to that is, once you've told people that, and you've put your finger — 'everybody that doesn't believe exactly like I believe, you're not a patriot, you don't care about the country' — what you do is you create greater disappointment in the hinterlands, because you gave them a false hope, knowing that you couldn't accomplish it, but it was about yelling, and screaming, and waving the flag," ...

"And, so what happens is, there becomes less confidence in the Congress and its ability to do its job."

[Coburn]...noted his ability to work across the aisle....

"I came out of the Senate with one of the most conservative ratings ever in the history of the Senate.... "And yet, I compromised all the time to accomplish things that were good for the country."

Right, you compromised-- now tell me the "good" that your compromises engendered for the country.

Blame it on Ted. Unbelievable! But not surprising.

RE: Cruz’s rhetoric and [his] inability to follow through

Can anybody explain to me how one is able to follow through if almost no one wants to follow his lead at all?

What more can Cruz do?

Tom Coburn USED to be pretty good, but he has been a HUGE disappointment lately.

I think Coburn is on to something here. There really are two paths we can follow. The Cruz Path, show below on the left and the Coburn Path shown below on the right.

Maybe we should rename the GOP. How about the White Flag Party?

"I call it 'the Cruz effect,'" Coburn [said]. "When you tell people you can accomplish something that you can't — for example, shutting down the government over the Affordable Care Act," Coburn said.

Colburn is wrong. The only thing stopping them from killing the Affordable care act is the lack of will necessary to do it.

I watched House Speaker Tip O'Neill constantly forcing crap legislation down the nation's throat against it's will. He constantly used his power, and the power of the house to get his agenda passed.

The reason the Republican party can't do the same is because they are a bunch of quivering P***Ys who are afraid the big bad media is going to do bad stories about them.

Tip O'Neill would have responded by cutting off funds to the FCC if they did not respond to his request to investigate these bastard journalists who were giving him problems.

Tip O'Neill played Hard ball. Our side doesn't seem to have the first clue about how to play hard ball, or the will either.

It makes me think they don't want to do what they say when they are campaigning.

So the former Sen. Tom Coburn would just sit idle and watch obama take his wrecking ball to the USA?

Does Coburn think obama should have the right to create or violate laws with his executive orders? I guess Coburn just believe obama is king of the USA.

Curious to know what he thinks is good.

Screw you Coburn. Cruz didn’t shut down the government, Obama did. A funding bill was presented, Obama rejected it. Beside, you bailed out and turned tail just when the battles are raging fiercest. I can’t recall a single one of those “accomplishments” you speak of. Just like Boehner, you always talked a good game then folded when the rubber met the road. And you talk down a conservative who is actually willing to fight? What’s the matter, don’t like how Cruz exposes you as a gutless coward? Good riddance.

This the same Tom Coburn who, when in the house, was considered a PITA to Newt Gingrich, because he believed (correctly) Gingrich was moving to the center and away from conservative values i.e. away from Contract with America ?

and this was different than Cruz how ? oh yeah...he was in the house then. (s/off)

Wait, didn’t every republican running for Congress in 2012 say they were going to stop obumber’s agenda, that’s why the were elected. Not that I support Cruz who actively supported TPA and the corker bill.

So Coburn, how did Harry Reid get everything he and Obama wanted when he was in charge of the Senate?

Shutdowns are usually used as a negotiation position. But declare to refuse to use it by the party of opposition from the outset is unforgivable. Furthurmore when it’s used it doesn’t affect the average American and they may even support such an action. It doesn’t even dawn on those members of that exclusive club called the US Senate that this presidential election having anti- establishment candidates leading in the current polls was the direct result of that action .

Congress is false hope about too many things, like doing something effective about the 19 trillion debt.
