Donald Trump leads the field competing for the Republican presidential nomination in Ohio, but would get defeated in a head-to-head race with Democrat Hillary Clinton if that election were held now, according to a political opinion survey by Bowling Green State University released Tuesday.

The first BGSU Poll had the real estate billionaire leading 14 other Republicans with 26.9 percent of the vote among likely Ohio voters. ...

Zogby Analytics interviewed 804 likely voters by email. Of those, 38 percent identified as Democrats, 31 percent as Republicans, and 31 percent as independents. The margin of error was 3.5 percent. The survey was done last Thursday through Saturday. ...

For the Republican nomination, retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson came in second after Mr. Trump with 21.8 percent. Next in line was Ohio Gov. John Kasich with 12.5 percent. After Mr. Kasich in the BGSU Poll was former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush and former corporate executive Carly Fiorina tied at 5.6 percent.

The poll cost $9,500, according to Jennifer Sobolewski, communications manager. She said the university’s interest in the poll is to raise BGSU’s visibility.

If America actually elects that cackling psycho Hillary, I think I’m going to find a new country to call home.

I can’t put up with that.

Don’t worry - Trump hasn’t campaigned in Ohio yet. Bowling Green is a college town, so with that in mind - I’d say this poll is rather impressive.

Ideally, it will be Trump versus Sanders. Realistically, that won’t be the case however so Trump needs to spend some time here in Ohio. He hasn’t spent any time here that I’m aware of. He can win over Ohioans and he absolutely has to. He will have to present a message that pulls at least some black votes and union votes out of the cities. If he can’t do that, he is not going to win. His tax plan will do just that. Ohio is very pro-second amendment too. Hillary is not pro-second amendment. He can hurt her with that in Ohio.

I really hope that he can save America from the fate of Hillary Clinton.

I cannot even fathom in my mind how anyone could actually support such a person as her.

She is truly frightening.

Not a valid poll. This is fluff, smoke and mirrors and I am not a Trump supporter, Cruz is my choice. However, I would vote for Trump if he is the nominee.

The real poll is of those that voted in the last election selected by random with a large enough sample to reflect past voting patterns.

Past voting records aren’t going to play a part in this upcoming election because many people I know, who have voted D the last few years are switching to Trump this time. Everything is out the window as far as predictions and past voting patterns.

+7D oversample. Head to head should be considered in that context.

That possibility only proves how ignorant the typical voter is in this country. Democrats have proven that they will lie, cheat and steal if it will lead to their election. All bets are off when it comes to an election and their is no such thing as honor, morality and decency.

Proof? Just look at that scum bag Representative Cummings.

You are correct, past voting patterns will be different relative to who they vote for. However, these are the people that will probably vote in the next election. When your group selection is only done by e mail, it automatically becomes bad data as it increases the number of people in the sample that did not vote in the past and are more likely to not vote in the future.

31% identified as independents too which seems curious. One would think a true Independent would be very interested in a Trump insurgency candidacy. That being the case, I have to wonder if some of those Independents aren’t actually Democrats.

Valid poll. We went through this in 12. OH has a high number of “independents” because you are AUTOMATICALLY listed as “independent” if you did not vote in your party’s previous primary. Since the Dem primary in 2012 was nothing, many Dems were automatically reclassified “independents.” They are mostly Dems.
