I think that Tip O'Neill would be ashamed of what Matthews said and did in support of Obama in 2008. O'Neill, while a HIGHLY partisan Dem, was a patriot - I don't believe that he'd have helped Obama in the least.
It’s sad commentary that Tip is further right than almost anyone in the GOP today. And he was. The Reagan era Dems would last 2 seconds in todays Dem party. The GOP would reject them outright as being too much like Cruz, Sessions or Lee.
You're correct - JFK, as liberal as he was, would be called a dangerous, radical right-winger in today's environment. The old Dems were left as Hell on social issues, but they at least loved their nation. Where are people like Harry Truman, Scoop Jackson, Hubert Humphrey and Sam Nunn in the Dem party today? Gone, drummed out, maybe never joined in the first place because the whole rotten organization has been taken over by the far Left, who despise EVERYTHING that ever made this country great, and who want to take it down.
Granted, there were a couple hard leftists,but for the most part, I can’t think of the names of those that were in full throated demand for homosexuality, anti Christianity, Supportive of modern levels of abortion, or even gun control AFTER Ron and Brady got shot.
Hell remember the PMRC and Tipper? It was the left that was railing about Rap and heavy metal, The Dems went after it FROM THE RIGHT! Not that I shared or share a lot of their views on it in general, but the point being, they based their arguments on positions the left would today call fascist at best. And it was a fully Dem Party supported effort that unfortunately included some GOP.
And we went from that Dem party to this one in about 10 years. Less really because Clinton kicked it off a mere 4 after Ronaldus Magnus left for the ranch.
