Ted Cruz Campaign Releases Mother's Birth Certificate to Satisfy Unsatisfiable Crazy People
Slate ^ | January 8, 2016 | Jim Newell

Unless he himself becomes president, Donald Trump should serve in the next administration as Special Envoy for Getting People to Dig Up Birth Certificates for Public Consumption, because he's hella good at it. His speculation about Obama's birthplace prompted the President to release his long-form birth certificate in 2011. And now, after only a few days of muttering about Cruz's eligibility to become president, he's prompted Cruz to release… his mother's?

Wait, it makes sense.

As best we can tell there are two main strands of Cruz birtherism. One is that the Supreme Court has never directly ruled on the meaning of the Constitution's "natural born citizen" requirement. Even though it is understood by experts to mean "U.S. citizen at birth," as Cruz was, some opportunistic critics, such as Trump, have been warning about the phrase's not-totally-determined meaning and how that could open the door to distracting legal cases if Cruz becomes the nominee.

The other is that maybe Cruz was not a U.S. citizen at birth, because his mother did not meet the requirements for transmitting citizenship to her child. As we wrote yesterday, "Those born abroad between 1952 and 1986 earned U.S. citizenship at birth if their parents were married and one parent was a U.S. citizen who spent 10 years in the United States with five of those coming after age 14. Cruz's parents were married, and his mother meets the citizenship requirements." This gives Cruz birthers another person's life to inspect: that of Eleanor Cruz, the senator's mother. Democratic congressman Alan Grayson (yes, there are Democratic Cruz birthers) has said that the eligibility suit he's supposedly prepping against Cruz would focus on Eleanor. As U.S. News reported this week:.....

They are actually doing this for Obama.

Slate? They hate Cruz. They know if Trump were elected he’d release the truth about Obama’s birth out of the country. They want to define NBC this way to protect their guy.

Responding to the issues.

1. Cruz stepped up and released this info most likely as a direct result of Breitbart showing his mother was on the Canadian voter roles.

This posed a problem because, at the time, Canada’s oath of citizenship for new citizens required they renounce their previous citizenship.

With the b.c., Cruz has stepped up and said his mother was never a Canadian citizen. That clears up that issue.

2. Regardless of the b.c. or his mom, there are those that believe a NBC is determined by the status of the father, as per the framers. Madison was the primary architect of the Constitution and he wrote in 1790 requirements of naturalization that defined NBC born here in the U.S. and determined by the citizenship status of the father.

Likely any USSC today would go for the broader definition that a NBC was a ‘legal citizen of the U.S. at birth.’

But it’s not a resolved issue legally. It’s ‘highly probable.’

Finally, I like Cruz. He’d be great for the Supreme Court. He’s the most conservative of the candidates. My concern for him is the GOPe wouldn’t give him the money to run. They’d starve his campaign and they are more than happy to stick with Hillary. I don’t see Cruz getting many black votes. Hispanics, yes. I’d be happy with him or Trump, but think Trump has the edge given his broader appeal and bankroll.

Raising these issues isn’t ‘throwing rocks’ at a candidate. It’s vetting issues in house and bullet proofing a candidate so Hillary and the evil Clinton machine don’t chop them up later.

Better to bring up all the negatives now in the primary and then it’s ‘old news’ by the time the general arrives.

Let’s not get in a war that spills over into the general. We need to defeat the Dems. This may be our last shot to save the country.

I think Cruz IS a natural-born US citizen.

I think the SC would find in his favor.

He DOES need to address this NOW though.

IMO, as long as one parent is a US citizen then that suffices.

Especially if that one citizen parent is the mother.

With a father you never know for sure... but no one ever said to a mother “But are you SURE the baby is yours!?” ...lol

LOL. Don’t forget they all cheer when he trashes someone which is multiple times daily and that is better than grits. His best attribute to trumpees, trashing someone, anyone, just too cool.

Hadn’t heard that, is there a basis for it, any links? I don’t think they are that big of fools. And I don’t think Trump wants to spend that much of his own money. Is that even how it works?

Saw that.

Here’s an excellent discussion of what a ‘natural born citizen’ is by a FR member:

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/news/2840767/posts

Leftists are likely covering for Obama. Trump, if elected, will release the truth around Obama’s birth. They want the fact he was born out of the U.S. to not matter.

Why else are they helping Cruz? They hate the guy.

Levin needs to chill out. It’s a campaign and if we don’t consider these issues, the Clinton evil machine certainly will.

You believe these same folks are going to turn around and give hundreds of millions to elect... Cruz?

Seriously?

They’re “unsatisfiable crazy people” because they want a candidate for POTUS properly vetted? I guess that would explain how Obama slipped through.

I think it extremely important to have Cruz. He has studied all things conservatism from a young age, he breathes it. I am terrified at who Trump would fill the courts with including SCOTUS. He shows a lot of affection for liberals that most conservatives dislike. Can’t believe right after he announced he mentioned his sister would be great SCOTUS - very liberal judge.

Salon: Ted Cruz is worse: The only thing scarier than Trump winning the nomination is him losing it - Stop freaking out about Trump winning the nomination because compared to Cruz, his agenda looks downright moderate......

"......I personally dislike Trump, with his obnoxious racism and his rallies that feel like anti-desegregation meetings from the '60s and his misogyny and his stupid hair, as well. But, personal style aside, the grim fact of the matter is that Trump is no worse than the wretched hive of scum and villainy that makes up the entire Republican field at this point. Every last one of those mothers is a moral monster who has no business running the country and if any of them win, this country will be so much the sorrier for it.

Let's say that Trump does flame out, Howard Dean-style, in the month of February. If that does happen, odds are that Ted Cruz, who has been lurking around in the background like Gollum, will step up and take the nomination. It's not just that Cruz is the favorite "second choice" option for Republican voters, but he's a strong favorite for Trump supporters, and will vacuum them up in case of a Trump collapse.

If this happens, it will be much worse than if Trump just wins this thing. Cruz has the word "senator" in front of his name and his kids are cute and he's won an election, so he gets treated as if he's a less-awful version of Trump. But he is actually way, way worse, if you look past surface issues like squawkiness in the press. Compared to Cruz, Trump's agenda looks downright moderate."..............

It is distracting for Cruz. Trump said he wouldn’t bring it up again unless it got down to the two of them. I know he was asked the question but Trump brought it up a year ago, several times since and said he had talked to people and there was no problem last August.
Levin gets on nerves calling people stupid. I don’t like that about Trump either. If you don’t have respect and common decency you should learn how to pretend well.

Ah yes, the once vaunted, then abandoned, “vetting” of candidates is back in vogue.

But that isn't what the government is telling those who are studying to take the test to become a NATURALIZED CITIZEN. What they are told is that both parents have to be citizens, NBC or Naturalized, at the time of the child's birth.

Of course Obama broke that rule, but there's a damned double standard at work here.

Born of an alien father in an alien country but somehow he’s a natural born citizen because his mother was an American? that’s questionable.

Trump is using LBJ’s tried and true tactic of, “Hell, I know he didn’t do it, I just want to hear him deny it,” to plant doubt in voters’ minds - an attempt to slow Cruz’s growing popularity - and “Concern Trolls for Trump” are out in force.

“I like Ted Cruz, but he really needs to put this to bed.....”

Note the reference to Natural Law in the first sentence of our Declaration of Independence.

It is crystal clear that the Founding Fathers used the Natural Law definition of 'natural born Citizen' when they wrote Article II. By invoking "The Laws of Nature and Nature's God" the 56 signers of the Declaration incorporated a legal standard of freedom into the forms of government that would follow.

President John Quincy Adams, writing in 1839, looked back at the founding period and recognized the true meaning of the Declaration's reliance on the "Laws of Nature and of Nature's God." He observed that the American people's "charter was the Declaration of Independence. Their rights, the natural rights of mankind. Their government, such as should be instituted by the people, under the solemn mutual pledges of perpetual union, founded on the self-evident truth's proclaimed in the Declaration."
