Microsoft on the hot seat in Iowa
The Hill ^ | 01/31/16 | Mario Trujillo

Microsoft volunteered to provide the technology to help tally up the results of Iowa's caucus, free of charge. Now it will be put to the test Monday night.

The contests in both parties are expected to go down to the wire. And the spotlight will be on precinct officials who have been trained on a new Microsoft app, which is meant to cut down on human error and speed up the reporting process.

Both the Republican and Democratic parties in Iowa have expressed strong confidence in Microsoft, dismissing late suspicion of corporate influence from the campaign of Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) early last week.

Party officials have said no errors have been spotted in caucus dry runs. But the Sanders campaign has created its own backup reporting system, as has the Hillary Clinton campaign.

"It will be interesting to see what happens if and when there are discrepancies between the Microsoft system and either Democratic or Republican campaign tabulations," Iowa State University professor Mack Shelley said.

The Microsoft apps will be replacing a phone reporting system used in 2008 and 2012 that required precincts to report their results through a touchtone keypad -- increasing the potential for human error.

I do hope there are checks and balances with this.

Why is Microsoft being allowed to do this given their pro Establishment position?

I sure hope someone is capable of auditing their system. The way Microsoft has gamed the political process on its BING search engine is disgraceful.

Iowans need to watch Microsoft like a hawk.   The company is not to be trusted within 10 feet of a ballot box.

Just wait til someone examines the bias in the software from xSen Chris Dodd’s Help America Vote Act.

They convinced state election officials, including Republicans in red states, to accept FREE MONEY and hire Chris Dodd’s (now Joe Manchin’s) close friends to develop election software.

The NSA has backdoors into all major software in the world, especially the Windows Operating System. You KNOW they have access to the vote counting software now. Trump needs to blow out the competition.

Votes s/b counted by hand. That s/b in the new Constitution.

We will know and see the results very quickly Monday night. If people see results being reported for their precinct different than what they experienced at their caucus, they will surely complain loudly. We let several people supporting different candidates observe the vote counting so there generally is no dispute at the precinct level. The Republican Party of Iowa is collecting all of the Form E’s, ballot counts, on Tuesday and will do an audit then.

This is pretty simple process. It could be done with an excel spreadsheet. You have a ballot with one question on it. 1,600 access points is the only complicated part.

The Iowa Republican party is trying to avoid the debacle four years ago with declaring Romney the winner and Santorum actually having the votes. I have heard from more than one campaign that this new Microsoft program should work quite well. All of the counts will be very verifiable to all the campaigns at the local level. Also, the results will come in very quickly.

I’ve also heard and read that the tests have been good (both parties have tested) and they expect it to work quite well. I’ve also heard that there will be paper back-up and as someone mentioned up thread, an audit will be done tomorrow.
