The first woman in Tennessee and the fourth in the nation to enlist as a combat engineer in the Army went AWOL last month and is now considered a deserter, according to a military spokesperson.
Erika Lopez made headlines in July when she enlisted for a role that could put her on the front lines of battle, just after the U.S. Army lifted its ban on women in combat roles.
Ms. Lopez was in basic training at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri, by September but was placed on convalescent leave by the end of the year, according to a local CBS affiliate.

Been to Benning and I would have to say that FLW has worse weather. Rain and mud you would not believe, hot as Benning in the summer and cold nasty in the winter.
Did basic and AIT there about 46 years ago and then spent a lot of time there in the last ten years. I love Missouri, but FLW is not my preferred spot.
She can't go back. She been charged with desertion. Very serious charge. AWOL will get you peeling potatoes for a few months. Desertion gets you brig time.
They can probably find the Little Latina Princess hiding out at her local N.O.W. Headquarters.

You may have something there. Guys see that carnage too, but they don’t go on to become mothers. My niece, who saw every burned, mangled body in the emergency room in Mosul, as an Army nurse, is definitely a different parent than she would have been without having seen such horrors. She has PTSD, making her dream horrific dreams. She is overly protective of her pre-K kids, and overly tired, because sleep brings no rest. She will always be fighting this raincloud over an otherwise blessed life.
