If you guessed that Matthew Lyon was an otherwise obscure progressive hero who was mainly known for making an ass out of himself, also being sent to prison under the Alien and Sedition Act, you would be correct.
The Lyon post office renaming bill happened in 2005-2006. Then Bernie Sanders rested on his laurels for 7 years, before buckling down and renaming the other Vermont post office in 2013-2014.

Matthew Lyon was no progressive, but an active Jeffersonians of the late 1790s. There were no “progressives” until c. 1895 or later.
Over half of Congress qualifies for that designation.
I totally agree. I have a lot of contempt for those politicians and pretty much anything they do.
Populist might be a better term for Lyon. He’s buried in an obscure rural cemetery near the KY State Prison above a town that was flooded for a lake at Eddyville.
Right now the young folks are all ga-ga over Bernie and Shrillary is not liking it one bit.
The real question is how many deaths is Bernie responsible for?

The less these idiots accomplish the less damage they do to America.
Every bill they do pass into law is another shovel full of dirt out of the grave they are digging for America.
McCain’s mother is still living. Today is her 104th birthday.
I don’t have the details, but Killary’s time in office produced similar results. All bark, NO bite.
I guess that means he’s done less damage in Washington than Republicans like John Boehner, Mitch McConnell and Paul Ryan.

I know a number of people who are supporting Bernie, but I haven’t been giving them a hard time about it. I want Bernie to do as much damage to Hillary as possible. The longer the fight for the nomination drags on, the more people in her own party will see Hillary for what she really is. Those weren’t mean, evil Republicans chanting “She’s a liar!” last Monday in Iowa. It will really be fun to watch these people when the DNC pulls the rug out from under Sanders.
Thanks, dj, I didn’t know Lyon left VT for KY. I don’t think the term “populist” was used until the 1880s or later. He was a VT U.S. House member.
