Two articles I read earlier, Poindexter said Scalia just said he was would turn in early, did not say “not feeling well”. I’m just nervewracked about this. Just too freaking weird.

I have grave suspicions about this. Really reminds me of Andrew Breitbart’s death.

Hi—glad to share...

The day before, he worked. He had some upset stomachs issues, but it was AllStar tournament baseball season so we had been eating “on the go” and after grabing something quick, he took our youngest son to baseball (and he pitched batting practice and then worked bull pen duty w/pitchers). He came on tired; and his left shoulder was hurting (but he dismissed they, thinking it was from all the pitching he had done over the previous weeks).

The morning of the heart attack he was nauseous in a way he had never felt before. His left shoulder bothered his and he had NO coloring, his lips were gray. I called off work and told him we should get him checked. He wanted to wait til our doctors office opened up, but I insisted that we go to the ER. He was adamanent NO 911 call for an ambulance, and I recall he said we would both spend day in ER waiting to be checked in. Amazingly we made it to ER he walked in; was sitting at admitting; slumped in chair (I’m off parking the car) and they called the Code.

When came in, the waiting room seemed in shock, I asked at the desk if my husband was checked in, and was told an ER doctor what happened, they they moved him to Cath lab and that a hospital social worker would be joining me asap. I don’t know what all happened but they gave me a bag w/his clothes/belongings and they cut his pants to get to artery to insert Cath.

I called our oldest son and he arrived in time for us to go into Cath theatre to see him (after the procedure). The blood was stunning & graphic (gauze, etc) but as caths are done while the pt is awake, my husband was able to talk w/us before he was taken to CICU. His color was restored and the Doctor was very gifted and encouraging. They explained the timing and how quickly they “got in there” and got the clot (that’s what kills).

He spent 9 days in CICU and several more days in a step down unit. He was on short term disability for three months. He had several other small stents (per the cardiologist they were “nothing burgers”).

His 6 year anniversary is this July—and doing great. He takes a “cocktail” of blood thinners/cholesterol meds, and has yearly stress tests.

If I can clarify anything for you, Freep mail me.

Lastly ALWAYS seek medical attention if you don’t feel “right” and ALWAYS call an ambulance.

The Breitbart thing was weird from the gitgo...

Scalia was overweight, and liked his food, wine and parties-not similar circumstances. He was also honest, vocal, principled and not afraid to get into a brawl if it was needed-Italians tend to have their asses covered, too.

I’m appalled that he died too, but I just don’t think anything sinister went down-it was his life to live as he chose, and he did-for a rather long time given his weight and habits.

You would definitely do a blood test to run a tox screen, at least, and the typical cardiac markers. The concern I have is that an autopsy was ordered AFTER they spoke with his doc and the US Marshalls.

I am NOT trying to be funny but maybe the excessive exercise was a factor.

Certainly a possibility. I'm inclined to believe his genetics nailed him. Everything else he did was as healthy as possible.

Thanks for the background, I’m glad it worked out ok. Sounds like you got it in the nick of time. Best thing about ambulance is EMTs can stabilize people even if traffic logistics mean it takes a bit longer to go to house, then ER.

My Dad had similar story which also worked out ok. Had been moving stuff around the house day before and in first year of retirement at age 65. Roto rooter up the leg/stent, same. He actually got the helicopter, which made me a bit envious.

Seems to me that a long term (day long) moderate exertion w/o eating well/drinking water is as rough on the pulmonary circulation as short term heavy exertion. I’m not sure why it takes overnight to “hit” but I suspect it might be the 7-8 hours of no fluid and slight stress induced by simply waking up as the straw that breaks the camel’s back.

I’m not a bit exercise person, but I am big on water and not tolerant of going hungry, even though I’m a light weight. When I do do things strenuous, water seems to help the most. I tend to “go” every hour or two during the day.

It seems to give me good endurance over those who are younger and stronger for weekend warrior stuff (e.g. my nephews, who are gym freaks). On trips to high altitude, I’m always the last one standing in the first 12 hours in spite of my relatively poor shape. Everyone else gets wiped out on altitude adjustment and are fairly useless until the next day. My guess is that enough water acts as a bit of a blood thinner itself.

Anyway, thanks again for the story. It adds to my comprehension of “things medical”. It sounds like you have a good handle on it.
