Climate Alarmists Unnecessarily Condemn Poor to Continuing Energy Poverty

Poverty and energy poverty go hand in hand. It is estimated that three billion people [1] still rely on solid fuel (firewood, cornstalks, etc.) for cooking, which, according to the World Health Organization, causes four million deaths per year from the indoor air pollution.

But instead of promoting electricity generation that would take the pollution out of the house altogether, there is a push by the Global Alliance for Clean Cookstoves [2] to merely reduce the amount of solid fuel burned inside theses poor houses. Their goal is to replace 100 million stoves that burn "firewood; agricultural waste, including corn stalks and dung, and natural debris, such as twigs, limbs and pinecones [3]" with 100 million other stoves that burn the same things (just less of them).

In the 1970s and '80s the socialism virtually disappeared from Asia and Africa. This had several catastrophic effects from the point of view of first world leftists. China transitioned from communism to fascism and became the world's second leading economy. India abandoned Gandhi's village socialism and began to develop their intellectual capital and the decline of Marxist ideologies and wars of "national liberation" in Africa resulted in a marked reduction in deaths related to complications of malnutrition and in bad Bob Geldof concerts.

Since that time, well fed leftists have gone to great lengths to keep what happened in Singapore, Taiwan and other formerly impoverished Asian countries from happening in third world excrement pits in Africa and elsewhere. The purpose of the "Climate Change" meme is to keep poor people poor. How else to encourage the revolution?

The left will do anything to prevent the spread of prosperity.

The ASME did good work with someone designing a metal grate that went into existing stoves, allowing ash to fall beneath the fire and air to come in, reducing fuel use and smoke production, at roughly a dollar per grate.

Long term, the solution is building power plants so they don’t have to use fire at all.
