The reality is both parties are the same party, so it was both the Democrat & Republican establishments. Which is the real reason they would have Hillary defeat a choice selected at the Convention.
I’m not sure if you’re trying to deflect or share the blame of Reagan’s mistake onto the Bush family. They deserve none of the credit for his accomplishments, and zero blame for his mistakes. Reagan knew personally how much the illegal invasion was killing the people of the United States, yet he still signed the legislation that authorized amnesty.

The mistake of amnesty was Reagan’s.
The Bush family has been aiding and encouraging the illegal alien inundation that followed.
His Dad was pretty much a reprobate too.
This is an interesting article, but I don’t think that things are as complicated as laid out in this article. Democrat politicians have offered free stuff. They have support from those who benefit from free stuff. Republicans have promised reduced government and conservative principles. They have delivered neither, and they are perceived as using the power that we have given them to enrich themselves and those who have underwritten their political careers. People believe that Trump will punish them for this.
The reasons for wide dissatisfaction are well known. The GOP failure to heed the warnings or pay attention to the "wacko birds" who tried to warn them is well known. The farce just seemed to peak with JEB and yet another establishment fiat after years of resistance to the "next in line" procession of losers.
(Falling back on Rubio only underlines establishment intransigence & inserting Romney's dump Trump speech shouts out "clueless")
The problem is that there is such a high demand for pay-back coming from the Trump camp that they just might actually destroy the party...and declare victory.
Great, where's THAT leave us?
Trump's popularity cannot be due to what he says because "Huuge", "liar", "very rich", "very, very, smart" and "I may sue..." aren't saying anything of substance. But the body language, the bullying tactics and schoolyard taunts apparently strike a chord with those who would burn their house down to kill the termites.
2016 could well have us represented by a rather nasty, quite spoiled, self promoting shyster who has been very well insulated by his apparent wealth and the influence that wealth provides.
And where does that leave us?
You have perfectly described one of the possible outcomes. Unfortunately, the list is large and growing and we have no well of knowing which direction this will go. By the way, I doubt that Trump will punish the establishment, which will leave the voters irritated.
