I think there are probably better roles for General Mattis

I was appealing to other Freepers for information. I thought perhaps someone knew something about the man. As it turns out, someone did post some quotes from Gen. Mattis.

If the General wanted to be President, he should have run for President.

Media and left trying to abdicate people’s choice. If we allow them to do this, we may as well toss the rest of the Constitution because our voice will have been silenced.

Agreed. I have much respect for Marine General James Mattis, but this is not the way.

My main concern about Trump is, does he mean what he says? Sometimes he backtracks on his positions on issues and that bothers me. Of course, nobody we elect seems to follow through on what they promise anyway, so might as well take a chance on someone who is not a career politician.

Perhaps this is the kind of person Trump should pick for VP. I’m so afraid he will take some RINO like Kasich or Christie.

Mattis would be a fine VP.

"You go into Afghanistan, you got guys who slap women around for five years because they didn't wear a veil.
You know, guys like that ain't got no manhood left anyway.
So it's a hell of a lot of fun to shoot them.
Actually it's quite fun to fight them, you know. It's a hell of a hoot.
It's fun to shoot some people. I'll be right up there with you.
I like brawling."

Marine General James Mattis

Panel discussion in San Diego, California (1 February 2005) as quoted in "General: It's 'fun to shoot some people'" CNN (4 February 2005)(For a more contextualized explanation of General Mattis' remarks, see this essay by one of the Marines who served under Mattis: "Breaking the Warrior Code" The American Spectator (February 11, 2005) by John R. Gen Mattis is an expert on the Plains Indians, and part of of his vast library includes hundreds of books on the various tribes.

He’s a very interesting man:

Early life and education
Mattis was born in Pullman, Washington on September 8, 1950.[3] He graduated from Columbia High School, Richland, Washington, in 1968 and enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in 1969. He later earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in history from Central Washington University and was commissioned a second lieutenant through ROTC on January 1, 1972.
Mattis during his service years was considered something of an intellectual among the upper ranks, with his personal library numbering more than a thousand volumes. Major General Robert H. Scales (ret.)(PhD), described him as “....one of the most urbane and polished men I have known.” Reinforcing this intellectual persona was the fact that he carried on his person a copy of the Meditations of Marcus Aurelius throughout his deployments.

If no one hits the threshold of delegates to get the nomination, then the brokered convention should only come up with a ticket among the 15+ who actually RAN.

Bush used to guarantee people he'd be the nominee. I always wondered what he meant.

In 1964,... the Republican Establishment launched a Stop Goldwater movement by pushing Pennsylvania Governor William Scranton. It didn't work.

And who got into office then, do we want that scenario played out NOW??
DUH, NO!!

Allen West is a field arty officer whose combat experience can be summarized with one enemy suspect who he made a name for himself by doing the right thing. However, that is not what combat is. It was more of what goes on in one’s base camp/ rear area with locals employed to cook, clean etc . We used to watch for Viets pacing off billets, chopper pads, and other targets.

I disagree completely about Mathis. He rolled over on the Haditha trial for the SecDef and everyone else persecuting our warriors who clearly were engaged in ferreting out insurgents who were trying to kill them.

Interesting. I figured there might be more to this general than what was in the article. The establishment loves their “yes” men.

He was awful with the Haditha defendants, and he chose the path to his 4th star over fairness to men fighting for their lives.
