Ahead of what could be the most emotionally charged party convention in decades — and with some delegates saying they have already received death threats — the U.S. Secret Service is making public its detailed security plans for July's Republican National Convention.
Secret Service spokeswoman Nicole Mainor tells Politico that the convention will have several levels of security and that all facets of the plan have been examined by special subcommittees for more than a year. The Secret Service is the lead agency, but the FBI, Homeland Security, state and local law enforcement will all play a role in securing the convention in Cleveland this summer.
Mainor said everything from multi-level ID checkpoints to ensuring the safety of the drinking water inside Quicken Loans Arena has been examined and planned to the last detail.
Still, the Secret Service acknowledges it cannot possibly monitor every interaction at an event with thousands of attendees, many of whom feel passionately about their preferred candidate.
That argument has spilled over into threats of physical violence, delegates opposed to front-runner Donald Trump told the Chicago Tribune. Colorado's GOP Chairman Steve House said he has received thousands of calls on his personal cellphone after his state party convention, where Trump's main rival, Texas Sen. Ted Cruz, managed to sweep the entire state's delegation.
House said most of the calls were polite and ended in productive conversations, but some included ominous threats against him and his family.
"Shame on people who think it's right to threaten me and my family over not liking the outcome of an election," House wrote on Facebook after the threats began.
Cruz complained that Trump and his political adviser, Roger Stone, had threatened delegates who do not remain loyal to Trump after Stone told Alex Jones of Infowars that Trump supporters would track down defectors at their hotel rooms in Cleveland.
The Trump campaign has never overtly encouraged violence or threats, but several Republican Party officials opposed to Trump told Politico they blame the Trump campaign for failing to do more to control supporters who step over the line.
With the prospect looming of a floor fight at the convention, Louisiana GOP Chairman Roger Villere questioned whether the convention would be a fitting place for delegates to bring their families. He said RNC officials have assured them the Secret Service will maintain order, both inside and outside the convention hall.
"A lot of us bring our wives and children. Do we really want to? That's one of the things that was asked," Villere said. "They assured us that we would be protected."
The GOP Establishment had better get over themselves and stop with the inflammatory rhetoric like the above. It's almost as if they want to create a self-fulfilling prophecy.
From seeing discussions here on FR, I know that it can get a bit heated, but blaming the Trump campaign for the enthusiasm of their supporters is utterly over the top. Not the way to win the general election at all.
But, of course, the GOP Establishment would prefer to have the Hildabeast in the WH and give both houses of Congress to the Dems. They prefer being the minority party after all.
The GOPe has learned to carve-out a very comfortable niche for itself as the JV team of the Uniparty.

If the people are not going to have representative govt, the people have every right to rise up. If Obama cancels elections we should just sit down and shut up? Not much difference between that and the illusion of elections.

I've emailed my representative and my two senators and told them that I will never vote for another politician with an R next to their name if the GOP screws Trump at their convention.
I doubt they’re releasing everything. At least I hope not.
That being said, I used to work a job with convention centers. A guy I used to work with told me about the Secret Service meeting with him when they secured the place beforehand.
Let’s just say - what you saw in a certain Tom Clancy movie could not happen. Not like that.

Nothing will happen of significance, because Trump is going to be over the 1237 votes necessary on the first ballot. End of drama.

There isn't a whole lot around the Philly venue to bust up. Philly PD did a good job with the Papal visit. This is a lot less people, and a much more finite venue.
Haven't been to Cleveland, yet, to see the venue and the surrounding area first hand.

“The conventions are going to be the standard show on the inside. It is outside the venues that should concern people. The local departments are going to have to lock down the chaos in the streets. I am expecting disruptive and riot style behaviors in both cities.”
You must be in law enforcement, the military, secret service or retired from one of them. Or you are just extremely intuitive about these matters. You are right, what goes on inside, which I expect Trump winning more than 1237 votes will solve as a problem, will not neutralize what will take place outside of the conventions, both Dem and Pub. Those venues will indeed have to be patrolled heavily for lots of disruptions that are almost guaranteed to take place.
All of those, except one. Going to be working in both cities.
