For the last month or so, Donald Trumps path to 1,237 delegates has been clear: Win Indiana and California.
But after his strong showings in the Northeast, Indiana no longer seems to be a must-win state to capture the Republican nomination.
Sure, winning the state would be very helpful toward gaining a majority of delegates. Without Indiana, he would struggle to get the 1,237 bound delegates needed to wrap up the nomination heading into the convention. But theres now a credible path to winning on the first ballot without it.
The main reason is Mr. Trumps success on Tuesday among Pennsylvanias 54 unpledged delegates. Even though none of them are officially bound to a candidate, 31 of the 54 spots went to delegates preferred by Mr. Trump. And before the election, others had said they would vote for the winner of their district (Mr. Trump won all of the states districts). My colleague Jeremy W. Peters reported that Mr. Trump appeared to have won about 40 of Pennsylvanias 54 unbound delegates. If this holds, the delegate math is a little different than what you might have read . Thats because my analysis and that of others included only pledged delegates; the 54 unpledged delegates were held out of Mr. Trumps path to 1,237.
If he has indeed moved many of those delegates off the sideline and into his territory, it obviates the necessity for him to win Indiana, which is worth 57 delegates . He would still need a comfortable victory in California enough to win about 130 of the states 172 delegates in the event of a loss in Indiana. He could bring that figure as low as 115 with good outcomes in West Virginia, Oregon, Washington and New Mexico, or with a few additional districts in Indiana.

Oh NOES, what will Cruzina and the eneMedia whine about?
I know, Trump , in his 38 minute speech yesterday,
mispronounced "Tanzania" He's now done for sure.
Trump may not need Indiana but he wants it. He may just carry it.
On the other hand, Lyin’ Ted and Outsourcing Carly absolutely NEED to win Indiana.
Not going to happen.
Indiana Wants Me

Indiana wants me, Lord, I can’t go back there
Indiana wants me, Lord, I can’t go back there
I wish I had you to talk to
If a man ever needed dying, he did
No one had a right to say, what he said about you
And it’s so cold and lonely here without you
Out there, the law is coming, I’ve been so tired of running
Indiana wants me, Lord, I can’t go back there
Indiana wants me, Lord, I can’t go back there
I wish I had you to talk to
It hurts to see the man that I’ve become
To know, I’ll never see the morning sunshine on the land
I’ll never see your smiling face or touch your hand
If just once more I could see, you, our home and our little baby
Indiana wants me, Lord, I can’t go back there
Indiana wants me, Lord, I can’t go back there
I wish I had you to talk to
I hope this letter finds its way to you
Forgive me love for the shame I’ve put you through and all the tears
Hang on love to the memories of those happy years
Red lights are flashing around me, good Lord, it looks like they found me
Indiana wants me, Lord, I can’t go back there
Indiana wants me, Lord, I can’t go back there
I wish I had you to talk to
Indiana wants me, Lord, I can’t go back there
(This is the police, you are surrounded, give yourself up)
Indiana wants me, Lord, I can’t go back there
(This is the police, you are surrounded, give yourself up)
Indiana wants me, Lord, I can’t go back there
(This is the police, you are surrounded, give yourself up)

My sense is Hoosiers will do what Bobby Knight has asked them to do. Their regard for the man is THAT high.
I think were looking at 1400 plus at this point.
The Tead and Farley road show will cinch it for him.
Is he permitted to talk now?
This woman is going to ride him like a $2.00 mule.
Question: Theyre both tead in the water, which one do you save?
Cruz = iCarly and Basketball rings
Trump = Bobby Knight 32-0
Hoosiers are going to go big for Trump. Cruz is toast
All very sad, because I believe Ted Cruz could have done a lot of good in the Senate or as a justice on SCOTUS. He is a pariah now.
Trump may not need Indiana, but he’s going to win there, and win big.
Will Terd Cruz ever drop out? If he loses Indiana will he just GTFO?
They need to check into Bellvue, they can't win on the second ballot and they have no idea how many delegates Manafort has convinced to vote for Trump to put him over 1237..
They both need to re evaluate the next chapter in their lives. They may have some 'splainin" to do.
On Drudge today.
IT AIN'T OVER TILL THE SKINNY LADY SINGS!
$500,000 TO CARLY PAC...
Indiana is there so it belongs to Trump
If you would have said that to me even six months ago, I would have gladly high-fived you over it. Now I'm telling folks I wouldn't vote him onto a local school board.
I also have this very squeamish feeling that we are going to hear about his family situation in the near future.
I am not convinced he's SCOTUS material by a long shot. His blaming of that rally violence on Trump made it clear he had no concept of the first amendment. If a "Constitutional Scholar" can't grasp that, do I want him anywhere near John Roberts?
Pariah. There was a time I'd have argued over using that term. After watching his caucus and delegate shenanigans, I'm thinking that's going lightly.
They’re both turds in the water, I’d flush them.
Well, I was saying last week he wouldn’t need IN.
I’m predicting a Trump blowout in Indiana.
Why? Because, the voters have had it with these stupid games.
In any other election year, someone as far ahead as Trump would have been declared the winner a long time ago. And, the party would be gearing up to focus on beating the Democrats in November.
As Herman Cain said recently: the NeverTrump people in the party and on the radio are delusional. They would rather sink the party and their radio careers, and hand the presidency to Hillary before they allow Trump to be the nominee.
The only solutions is for the VOTERS to put a stop to it by voting overwhelmingly for Trump in the remaining primaries.
I believe that’s why we saw the Trump landslide last Tuesday, and why we’ll see it again. Republican VOTERS know it’s over—Trump will be the nominee—and are ready to move to the next stage: beating Hillary.
Very well said.
